Wicd or Network Manager?

Post by merlwiz79 »

I have the latest version of Wicd installed on the latest beta build of Felicia XFCE CE.
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfile ... _id=635891
It works fine and I have had no problems with it.
It doesn't have the extras that network manager has.

I installed Network manager and it wouldn't work after I installed it.
I used Felicia RC 1 to check it out.
It took 7 reconnects to just connect to my wifi router for the 1st time.
Might just be me though, I have the network hidden and it uses WPA.
Has extra settings for 3G and other mobile networks. http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/ ... ager%200.7
Some sites report a regression in WPA and having to switch to Wicd.

I to have had trouble with Network Manager in Felicia. I just can't get it to connect to my various wireless set-ups at all. I found Wicd to be a very reliable replacement all round and more reliable than the Network Manager under Elyssa.

I had to change the settings in Network Admin, so all connections was in Roaming mode.
After that it worked ok but forgot to test wireless.

I think wi-cd is better and easier. But I can't set ICS (connection sharing) when this program handle my connection. So I have back to network manager, which always have problems with Wi-fi for me (ralink).
It is hard to say, which is better, it depends what you want (what you're doing on PC), but I prefer Wi-cd.

If you go to the wicd forums, they may be able to fix this for you.

I think they won't fix this. The problem occurs because Wi-cd is not using /etc/network/interfaces to its config and when you want to share your connection you should have net config there. Im using this method to ICS:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=91370

Wi-cd not using root privileges and it couldn't write its config there. This is very good program, in my opinion it is better, than network-manager.

Maybe there is another way to share connection, but I knows only one.
Thanks for advice.
