No please don't move to KDE 4.x. I have just been using the latest Kubuntu 8.10 & I absolutely hated using the KDE 4 desktop. I even set it to use traditional menu system but still I was unhappy as there are very few settings to allow you to customise menus, panels. or the desktop to something you feel comfortable with. I gave up in the end and installed Ubuntu 8.10 with gnome until Mint hopefully releases a version 6 Felicia using the KDE 3.xxx Desktop.

I am looking forward to KDE 4 under mint. Kubuntu set the bar low in my opinion, and I know the Mint team will do better, so I won't pre-judge it based on Kubuntu 8.1.

To the KMint Team, from your own post, KvistacrapDE 4.x is giving you grief. Please DITCH IT!

I think the Distrowatch article linked in one of the other posts is 10000% SPOT ON. 4.x is NOT, WONT BE READY for real use any time soon.

i had been using linux mint kde version since version 3, and it has been great. but since kde version 5 has taken so long, i have decided to switch another distro. sorry, but i cannot support a distro that takes so long, u have had more than 6 months to come out. so bye

I think theres a misunderstanding on your part of how the KDE "COMMUNITY EDITION" is created.

There is not some HUGE team of developers like canoncial has. This is Boo and a few others. They have to wait for t canoncial to release the *buntu version then re-work it to de-gnome it and get the superior KDE V3.5.x installed along with all the other enhancements.

I want there to be releases in a steady state, that does not mean every 6 months to the day, minute hour and second. Problems happen, they need to be resolved. If it turns into 8 months if it resolves the problems, so be it. Release WHEN READY!

I am not sure, but I think theres a huge misunderstanding in how KMint is developed and released, and GMint as well.

I also disagree with KDE 4 but we might be surprised with what boo & the other devs come up with.

Unfortunately Boo with out rewriting from scratch KDE can not "fix" KDE's fubar. I am just not into the whole concept of the way KDE.org wants to head.

One post in another thread already is showing that 4.x is providing headaches that don't sound to be worth the hassle that using 3.5.10 would allow us to keep on track.

If Boo wants to work with 4.x in the "LAB" for possible WAY FUTURE releases, great, but for the mainstream release for now 3.5.10+ is the way to go. When KDE gets their project back on track then we can take another look.

I actually am hoping and think that a fork of KDE is immenient as your either in the 4.x camp, or not, and I am not. Theres no middle ground on this one.

Sorry Boo et al, but I have to agree with these anti-4.x posts. Fortunately Mint Gnome has impressed me enough that I'll stay with that for now. But as to Mint going to KDE4.x, I want none of it for as long as possible.

And for the argument that "most distro's are going that way so we should to", that may be correct. But the distro that stays with KDE-3.x the longest will likely find it's user base grow tremendously as it's competitors fade away as well.

Can't we have the option of which KDE to install? Just take M5's KDE, update it and add it as an option during the install. Mint KDE is already on a DVD so space on the disk is not an issue

What a lot of people do not realize is that Kde 4.x.x will become the defacto standard in the future. Kde will finally drop support for anything that is not Kde 4.x.x and will stop development on earlier versions. Where does that leave the users who say they will not migrate to Kde 4? Well you won't be able to switch to another distro because Kde 4 will be adopted by all. Those who refuse to evolve will have to use another desktop manager. At the present time I'm not tickled with Kde 4 either but I will evolve when the time comes and I'm sure, just like the Mint KDE is now, we will have a first rate Kde 4 desktop manager. As far as switching to the Kubuntu repositories from the Ubuntu repositories, thats the way it should be. There won't be anymore problems with one than there is the other. Kubuntu is very stable and useable for a lot of people so the last release of Kubuntu did not fall on its face. Anyway I'm sure that Boo will not release junk. LinuxMint KDE CE will always be a first rate disrto and everyone should realize that now. Looking forward to the future!

If KDE.org would like to make V4.x as stable as V3.5.10+ AND have the ABILITY to 100000% DISABLE/BANISH/GUT the "new and improved" garbage of V4.x then fine. Till you have an option that ala "Winslopper Classic" mode for XcraP then 4.x is not for me.

KDE.org BLEW IT BIG TIME and is going to MISS the LINUX BOAT w/4.x and at the worst time. Linux adoption is increasing. This is NOT the time to be making radical changes like V4.x, especially without a way to revert to full blown 3.5.10+ mode.

Thanks to this move KDE could be on verge of becoming a foot note in the Linux Revolution and thats really sad, as I feel its head and hands above the others including gnome.

And what you seem to forget is that KDE 4 is supposed to run on Linux, OSX and Windows.

Mint KDE 6 will use 8.10/KDE4 as a base, so there is no sense in complaining about it. I hated KDE4 at first also, but after using Opensuse 11 with KDE4, it isn't that bad. There is a folderview feature that Opensuse backported from KDE 4.2 that lets the folderview applet cover the entire desktop seamlessly. You can't tell your not using a traditional desktop while using that desktop option. I hope Boo can include this in Mint 6. The next couple of releases will bring more functionality back to KDE also. Mint 5 KDE is KDE3, and is good for 3 years. Other than that you are down to Mepis 8, PCLinuxOS 2009, or Debian Lenny(for new releases). Everyone else has switched to KDE4 already.

EDIT: I forgot, Opensuse 11.1 will also still offer KDE3 on the DVD version.

I am well aware of who is copying who... Theres plenty of copying going on in Redmond and Cupertino.

Xerox should have nailed them to the wall over GUI & the mouse alone.

As for KDE on Mac and winslopp....Nope didn't forget, I just don't care. As far as I am concerned its a so what situation. I don't use a maCRAP or winslopp.

KDE 4.x is a dud.

I have uploaded Linux Mint 6 KDE4 DEV 026 for testing by other devs.
Hopefully it is good enough to release for everyone to try, test, give feedback.
Feedback will be the most useful inorder to add, remove or hide applications or change configurations.

there will most likely be a 2 RC's to get all the apps and configs right.
with KDE4 being heavily under development I might even enable the proposed and backported repos if they have updated KDE4 packages.

not long now I hope.

Hy Boo,
that´s really good news. I have been using Kubuntu´s KDE 4 Intrepid for quite a while now, and yes, you have to enable the Backport repository to get the latest (updated) Kde4 packages. I am also using parts of the proposed repo (this is the unstable branch) due to missing language pack translations in german. Amaroks RC1 is also available from the so called PPA repository (http://www.kubuntu.org/news/amarok-2-rc-1) . Many people have problems with KDE4 and, yes and even a friend of mine who is using the latest Mint KDE has experienced problems with his laptop on kubuntu Intrepid - but KDE is awesome and it is getting better and better so the present problems will hopefully dissappear in the near future. Lets see how the Mint KDE4 Version will look like

I failed the Linux Mint 6 KDE4 DEV 026 due to mainly synaptic being missing, which caused mintUpdate to not download updates.
It got auto removed after ubufox was removed.

So a few more days wait...

Hi,

Yes I have kDE CE Elyssa installed (3.5.10)
and working well. So I have no hurry
in a prompt public release of RC1 6 Felicia
for testing and then a final version for daily use.
I just hope that we can have a good final version Mint KDE CE 6 Felicia.
Meanwhile, I am using KDE Mint 5 KDE (3.5) and Kubuntu 8.10 KDE 4xx only with backports repo enabled. After the Mint KDE CE is released, I will delete the Kubuntu (and its adept manager)
and got my spare partition back for other purposes.

When it (Kde Ce final) will be released officially?
I suppose it will be released when it's ready as always.
