Ctrl+Alt+Backspace may better but it wipes everything
What about Ctrl+Alt+F1 followed by Ctrl+Alt+F7? OK it brings you back to the same X but who knows
You have pretty standard hardware Intel 945 (ICH7) which works well under Linux
It's impossible to say anything about the cause of such an error - all sporadic errors are hard to diagnose but my guess is faulty hardware (overheating) or if it's software a buffer that gets filled
