WOTM Source files

Postby McLovin on Thu Nov 27, 2008 12:15 pm

Ok, thanks to sputty we now have a location for the WOTM source files. So if you win WOTM, please contact me, either through PM, or e-mail, so that I can get the source files to the ftp server, as we do need to keep the source files available. The source files would be the orginal svg, if made using vectors, xcf, with the layers intact, if made with gimp, psd if made with photoshop, or what ever the project file extention ins for the program used to make the image. This is going gice us a way to keep things organized, and be able to comply with the LinuxMint GPL license.

Great! :D
I've been planning for similar idea along these lines for some time now...
The only difference being that it would be a space to store
ALL mint wallpaper source files that anyone cares to put up there.
So anyone who wants to can easily grab the source and alter it anyway they want,
and even pick up a new idea or two about wallpaper making and about
different techniques used by different artists and a chance to get into or even deepen
once knowledge in Gimp, Inkscape, Photoshop and whatnot!
I'll get back to you in this matter.

How does this sound?

How far did you get with the idea zwopper? i sent mclovin a pm about a similar plan i had myself a while back. I quote:

My original plan was to set up some glorified web hosting service for images, i.e. the user signs up and is given their own account on the website, a directory, and given their own ftp account. That would mean we would be able to literally drag and drop images and source files into the server using good old nautilus :D, the website could wrap the image location in some [img ] tags for use on the forum and wherever else they want to put them...I could probably have a working version together in a couple of days.

I mean if i was really going to go over the top with it i could integrate some sort of wiki for sharing idea's and concepts (like https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid).. but a bit more organized.. i was never keen on the whole wiki concept. These are all just ideas in my head now and it obviously wouldn't work without support, but my main area of expertise is php.. i could put them all together if i put my mind to it, what sort of things were you thinking about?

Just wondered if you needed any help?

@sputty01: Seems like your idea has come further then mine.
I was planning a completely different and much simpler concept, your idea is much better
I say, pick up that thread and go with it!

well, the ftp side of it is already done, and as it seems, I have some web space for a web site that I can use for whatever, even to set-up a deb repo, bit I have no idea how to set 1 up, so if anyone knows, i would be more than happy to listen. But I can still set up a wen site to go to and have links to the files, put thunbnails for the images, and then link to the source files.

I think it's great to start with what McLovin has and go from there. I've been tossing around the idea of creating some tutorials, and posting them somewhere. I'm not sure if this is a way we want to go, just a thought. It would be nice to make it as easy as possible for people to browse and search the images, but I may not be the one to ask how. I'm learning, but others know more then I.

Ive thought about the idea a little more and have a very fuzzy picture of how it could work in my mind. Basically a user could register an account and be given the ability to upload/download images through a web interface or ftp. Once uploaded the site could generate thumbnails of various sizes & effects and create the necessary forum tags etc created for them (similar to image shack but without the ad's). On top of that it would also be possible to implement some sort of tracking system whereby you would be able to see how many times your image has been viewed and from which sites most of the views came from (so you could see where provides the most exposure)... It wouldn't be too complex a system to create or anything.

I just think its important that we don't end up taking the focus of the art project away from the forums here, one of the things that i personally like about mint is that all the interaction between users takes place on here, rather than being spread out across multiple sites. So i would hope that any additional services to the forums aim to support what goes on here rather than compete with it.. anyways i'm just thinking out loud so feel free to ignore me :)

As I think about it some more, and I'm just thinking and rambling here, I have to agree with sputty that we don't detract from what we have here in the forums. We could always propose an 'Mint Art Tutorials' thread if there was some interest. I do think t would be nice to have a site where all the artwork and the source files can be stored & browsed. I can envision something where you could search for art by artist, or by tags, or some other vague search criteria. It could be just a simple gallery. Just some more thoughts to consider.

The WOTM has been dead for a while, I got very ill and had step down from everything I was doing in the Mint community, and the art kind of fell by the wayside, so unfortunately for the time being, WOTM isn't going on, that may change in the future, but for right now, it is what it is.
I am going to lock this thread for the time being, as it holds no real relevance at the current time, if things change, I will unlock it.
