I'm pretty sure this has nothing to do with the speakers and I think it is a bit odd
Check all settings for sound (double click the speaker next to the clock) and settings in the players
There may be a way to select output if you have both internal and external speakers - don't know for sure I'm on a desktop now.
For starters which version of Mint exactly?
Which laptop and more importantly which hardware in the laptop
Run lspci in a terminal and post the result

This is ICH8 and there have been a bit of a problem with that and sound as you can find if you search the forum for ICH8

Of course you can't use model=acer and I doubt compal is an option so use model=auto
This is of course not pulse audio but it seems it works in Elyssa and Felicia anyhow
