Printing a PDF document... solved

My daughter has recently sent me a PDF file, converted from a Word doc using freepdf creater. The pdfs produced are in 1.4 format.

In all the versions of LinuxMint I've used previously, starting with Cassandra, I've had no difficulty in printing a PDF file or opening it in OOo. Has something changed in Felicia because here is what happpens.

Clicking on the document automatically opens it in evince document viewer. If I select print - two options appear: print to file and
print to lpr (is this print to line printer?) As I don't wish to print to file I choose print to lpr. This brings changes to the bottom half of the dialogue box to show a writable icon alongside the words Command line. lpr is already entered.Clicking on Print does nothing. Not even a flicker from my default printer to show that the command has been sent. My default printer is a HP ColorLaser Jet 2605dn and I have no idea what other command I should type in the writable icon to successfully print the document.

I have tried to open the document in

OOo using each of the encodings in turn, and just get

AbiWord just shows a blank screen

Scribus tells me it is not an acceptable format.

Has anything changed in this version which has upset my "apple cart"?

I am certain that prior to Felicia I had no problems with previous versions but am prepared to believe I may be dreaming. If so, what the devil am I doing wrong?

Seems your printing is not setup quite right
I get print to File - PDF - my_printer (Evince 2.24)
Check that printing works ok for other files, take a look in Cups (localhost:631)

Thanks for your response, Husse. I didn't know how to launch host: 631 - tried entering the words from the command line and bash told me the command was not recognised, and entering http:///host: 631 in a browser just put up a Google search page.

I then went through the Troubleshoot option in Control centre - Printing - Help - Troubleshoot and the last few lines of the long debug output reads:

I end up in linuxquestions.org - this is due to a setting in Firefox that tells it to search when you enter a URL but frankly I can't find it - it may be in about:config

I eventually got it through http://127.0.0.1:631/ and found that both for normal printing and printing PDF files the default printer was the HP Color Laser Jet 2605dn, even though evince would not recognise it.

A little more research led me to Adobe Reader, which I installed, and opening a PDF file with that enabled me to print. I uninstalled evince
