Loud white noise burst when Mint starts up solved
I am experiencing a loud (and brief) white noise sound when starting up Mint. The noise sounds like a radio not tuned to any station.
The noise lasts about 2 seconds, and it happens after logging in, when the screen is black before Gnome has completely started up. It's not a huge problem provided the volume is set low, but if one of the kids has turned up the volume knob when I wasn't looking, the noise can be truly tooth loosening
Any ideas what could be causing this and what I can do to fix it? I am using Mint felicia at the moment. I also had the same problem with Elyssa, which was the first version of Mint I tried. I never had the problem with other linux distros.
I searched a bit on the web and found this potential fix:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=896015
....but it didn't work.
I also checked all my "sounds" settings and played all the system sounds...none of those are responsible as far as I can tell.
My hardware is a Packard Bell i-Extreme H5030 Gold, with a Radeon X300 graphics card, TV tuner (may be something to do with the problem???), ethernet card with D-link ADSL modem plugged in. I have a microphone plugged in to one audio input, and stereo speakers on the outputs.

Re: Loud white noise burst when Mint starts up
Do you hear the log in sound?
If not I think this somehow has turned into white noise
You can check it in Control Center > Sounds
If not I think this somehow has turned into white noise
You can check it in Control Center > Sounds
Re: Loud white noise burst when Mint starts up
yes i hear the login sound. I also checked all the system sounds (Control Center -> Sounds) and none of them are white noise. i'm wondering if it's something to do with my TV tuner card....but no idea what / how to check.
Re: Loud white noise burst when Mint starts up
Why not - it may not be fully initialised and not receive a signal for a moment and the white noise there propagates somehowTV tuner card
Re: Loud white noise burst when Mint starts up

Re: Loud white noise burst when Mint starts up
I'll see if I can find something, but I understand it as you have fully OK sound apart from this so it has low priority

You can try this:

Although I'm kind of leaning towards the tv tuner as the source of your problem...
Re: Loud white noise burst when Mint starts up
That didn't solve it.
What could I do about the TV tuner?

Re: SOLVED Loud white noise burst when Mint starts up
I did a bit of Web Searching about this.
In the end, i removed pulseaudio in Synaptic, and now the noise has stopped.
