Slow torrents in Felicia

Felicia is now my main operating system on my Dell laptop (since rc1)
However I have to load windows xp to download torrents. The reason is that under Felicia the downloads are really really slow.
I have tried Transmission, Deluge, Ktorrent and utorrent under wine.
Yes i have set the ports on my router.
Is it a wifi drivers issue?

What can I do to resolve this. I don't want to use XP?

I would love to have some insight into this as well, as I have the same issue:

For the past couple weeks I've been trying out both Ubuntu and Mint (both latest releases). When downloading a 700mb torrent using Transmission, I noticed the following:

Mint: Average download speed: 30kb/s
Ubuntu: Average download speed: 400kb/s

HUGE difference, and I cannot understand why. I even disabled Mint's firewall thinking that may have been the reason for such a slow speed, but that has proved not to be the case. Can anyone help? I prefer Mint over Ubuntu, but this is almost a deal breaker for me.

Thanks, I really appreciate the effort on this forum. Some additional info that might help:

Upload speeds do not seem to be as much of a problem. Last night I was downloading an ISO (many seeders, few leechers). Average speed and settings:

Download: 45kb/s
Upload: 250kb/s
Firewall: OFF

This makes me think there's some error in the reporting of speed.
Of course the upload could be only the parts that you already downloaded - but still....
What if you become a bit nasty for a while and turn off upload
You can't upload too much without hampering download

:Nods: I'd thought of that, but when I set a strict upload limit, the download speed decreased even MORE. It's like the program sat there and said, "You want to be cheap on your uploading? Fine - I'll be cheap with your downloading."

Right now my best 'workaround' is to boot up Windows XP and use Bittorrent for the downloads (which gives me average speeds of Transmission in Ubuntu). Hoping to get to the bottom of this so I can kiss Windows goodbye!

I'll jump in here and report having the same issue. I've taken to booting WinXP and downloading through uTorrent until it's resolved.

sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 6881 -j ACCEPT

If you want to revert to how it was before change ACCEPT to DROP and run the command again
This is presuming your torrent program uses port 6881 and it probably does
Pleas report back success or failure

As a Linux n00b, how can I determine which port it's using?
There is a "Peers" tab in Transmission, and it lists a Listening Port of 51413. This port is listed as 'closed' 98% of the time - I've tried searching various forums on how to open it, and have even tried different port #'s, but it continues to remain closed. However, this same port (51413) is listed as 'open' in Ubuntu's Transmission.

Exchange 6881 for 51413 or perhaps keep both open, but remember there is a small risk doing so
