MintUpdate crashing

Post by JpBя »

I have two computers running Felicia, and on both, MintUpdate crashes as soon as I log in. If I try to run it manually, it will check for updates, find packages that need updating, and then freeze. The window is totally grayed-out, and I have to kill it. Again, same symptoms on totally different hardware. Both are fresh installs, updated to stable per the instructions in the blog post. Anyone out there have any ideas?

After further troubleshooting, I've discovered that if I remove the "main" section from the

Code: Select all

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ intrepid-updates main restricted universe multiverse
line in my sources.list file, it doesn't freeze. Of course, I'm missing 81 recommended updates without it! I don't want to update just using apt (without being able to see the "score" of the new packages), lest I break something. Anybody?

Is it possible that my two machines are the only ones affected this way? :( This is really frustrating...

Anyone? I can't understand this... I get how there could be a problem causing one of my machines to do this and not the other, but they both have done it since the time of install. How can I be the only one with this problem?

My problem is that when I try to run MintUpdate, the root password box doesn't have text in it (the box pops up but it is empty). After having it sit there empty for 5 minutes (nothing happening), I realized that it was waiting for me to enter the password. So I blindly entered the password (no text appeared) and then it went on working.

I just recently installed LM 6 fresh from the Live CD (first time trying LinuxMint) and things run ok except for silly windows issues like this. It seems like some recent updated that went to level 3 on the 24th made matters worse.

I'm hoping that these text/windows issues get fixed quickly. My current issues are:

OpenOffice drop down menus have no text.
Firefox no longer has the top window frame/bar that has the close X or the minimize box.
Whenever I need to enter root p/w, the box that pops up is empty (but it still wants the password).

I'm sure that there are others, but I am mostly using this machine for Firefox at the moment.
I know this isn't quite your topic, and you should have created a new topic for your issue. However, with your problem; have you changed your theme lately? I have run into that myself when installing a new theme that doesn't work nicely with other programs.

Also with your Firefox problem, have you by chance hit the F11 key, that maximizes the window totally, or is it other programs that are doing this too?

JpBя, have you tried going into Synaptic Package Manager and checked through all the repositories to make sure nothing is amiss? And you say you're running Felicia. Are you using the 32bit or 64bit version?

The sources.list on both machines were untouched, until I tried going through and removing repositories one at a time. There isn't anything wrong with the line that makes it freeze:

Code: Select all

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ intrepid-updates main restricted universe multiverse
Does it look the same on your machine? Would it be too much trouble to post yours so I could compare? Also, I'm running 32bit. Thanks for replying! its been a little lonely over here... :D

No trouble at all. I just need to get to my laptop some time today though since I am at work at the moment.

EDIT: Here is my complete source list for you to compare. Hope it helps.

I had this same problem.

I just removed Amarok 2 (designed for KDE) which seemed to work though it seemed to be causing my MintUpdate to freeze as described. I uninstalled it and MintUpdate works fine now.
