Dell Inspiron with Intel 82865G Graphics problem

Post by Fornhamfred »

I have been running Mint 5 with a Fujitsu Siemans 19inch LCD with no problems. At the native resolution of 1280 x 1024 the desktop fills the screen and I have the taskbar on autohide. With Mint 6, at the native resolution there is a gap at the top and bottom of the screen the depth of the default taskbar depth and when the screen refreshes the display is very distorted for a few seconds. Is there a change in the default video driver and if so how can this be changed? Xorg.conf gives no information.

This is one of the tricky questions
This is a fairly old chip - Intel has withdrawn support for it....
I think you should check your /etc/X11/xorg.conf so that you have (explicitly)
Driver = "intel"
under
Section "Device"

Thanks Husse

Have edited the Xorg.conf file but has made no difference. Is the default driver different from Mint 5 to Mint 6?

The entire X is new like it was in Elyssa
There has been developments on the driver side too
Try Driver "i810" or Driver "i740" after that you've tried all the Intel drivers (to my knowledge)

I have tried the alternate drivers but no joy. I have resolved the display size as this was my desktop background - should have thought of that.
I have downloaded the latest version of Ubuntu and the display problem does not occur with the live cd as it does with the Felicia live CD and installation. Xorg.conf is identical so looks as though this could be a MInt problem. There is no way I want to run Ubuntu instead of Mint.

Sorry - does not ring a bell
I have very little time over for Mint a couple of days so I add this to my list of unsolved problems and come back to you on friday or in the weekend

Thanks Husse

It can wait, I also have 5 on the system and can use this in the meantime.

I still have the screen distortion when loading any browser. I am wondering if this could be anything to do with Java as I use gotomypc and after the initial login the programme uses a java viewer. In 5 this is loaded very quickly in both firefox and opera and works well but in 6, in firefox you can go get a cup of tea waiting for the viewer but eventually displays the next login and works OK but in opera it gets to the next password screen quicker but will not accept the password.

I am out of my depth with this but I have found this in my home file and I am not sure how it was generated but could be significant.

plugin-stack trace.

gotomypc....
How is your setup?
This is for remote control - I'm not following, do you browse through another computer?

GoToMyPC allows you to remotely access your computer from any other Internet-connected computer in the world with almost any operating system through a secure, private connection. I am using my home computers to access my company pc using either Firefox or Opera. In Linux this uses a java viewer and it is this viewer that is either very slow connecting in Firefox or does not work in Opera using Mint 6. I was wondering if this is connected to the display problems and the plug-in stack trace.

This is a special case more to do with java than X
There is
Broken pipe
I don't know how important it is but it does not sound good
You could try to install the latest java from Sun

Hi

The xorg file is found in etc/x11/xorg.conf. I would be interested to know how your displayworks when opening your browser, do you get a wavy display before the screen shows the browser page OK?

With regard to your monitor, I have a Fujitsu Siemans 19" LCD which is detected as FUS 19" and allows all resolutions up to 1600 x 1024. Before you alter the xorg file it might be useful to post the contents of your file here.
