Synaptic disappered

Post by mommykore »

Help me please. I'm absolutely Linux-retarded (was given this computer by someone who swears by Linux...). I really am trying to understand it, but I hit up against the wall too often. I'm currently having trouble finding Synaptic to get an application that will allow me to store my music on the computer with the option to either burn a cd or load my mp3 player. Synaptic doesn't seem to exist on my computer anymore...it comes up with a box: "An error occured...E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report."

I have NO IDEA what this means. If someone can walk me through re-installing Synaptic, then finding an appropriate application for said options, I WOULD VERY MUCH APPRECIATE IT! Thank you!

mommykore,

First, do exactly what it says. Unlike Windows, Linux error boxes usually give you good advice. Open a terminal and type: (look in the menu for the terminal program.)

sudo dpkg --configure -a

This will probably solve the problem with synaptic. You should then be able to open it by selecting it from the menu.

The other part I am not too sure what you are asking for. You already have burner programs on your install by default. Look through the menu at the descriptions and you should find one. It might be k3b or Brasero. These are two of the most popular. Loading mp3s to a player, I don't understand. All the audio players I am familiar with on Linux have the built-in ability to set up play lists, so...
