Upgrading my Linux Mint Install

Hello

I have Linux Mint 4.0 or 4.1 or something like that.

I want to install the latest version BUT keep all my data without "backing it up" to another HDD.

So ... if I make sure all my files are in the /home location can I do a fresh install BUT keep /home and then when I'm done all my data will still be there ... right?

I mean I realize that I'll have to re-install software that I use but as long as my video files and text files and image files and music files etc. are still around I'll be happy.

Make sense?

I guess the next question is how do I properly set up the disk partitioning part of the install to make this work?

P.S.
Would it be better to install my data to a different location or "partition" and then just do a full install (without "touching" that data location) then copy my stuff back to the newly installed /home ???

Go into Gparted, you can find it in the menu, and post a screen shot of your current partitioning. This will give me a better idea of your options, enabling me to give you better advice.

You have yourself in a corner here my friend. Looks as if you have 175 Gig. of something and only 10 gig free!

The first piece of advice I would give you is don't try to keep anymore data. You are very close to not working now.

You really only have two rational choices here. The first would be to off load all, or most, of your data to some other storage device, hard drive, stack of dvd, etc. The other is to deep six, (throw away), a very large chunk of your data, if that is practical.

Do yourself a favor and when you repartition make a relatively small / partition, about 12 Gig., and put all your data on a separate partition, which you can then mount in your /home directory. Keeping your data on a dedicated partition has some very big benefits when it comes time to upgrade.

Well I've been meaning to or wanting to buy a new HDD so I guess I will do that (time to do my taxes and get that refund) and I will of course consider that other thread when it comes time to set it up /install.
