Problems with activation - anonymous posting allowed again

Post by Husse »

The forum stopped sending activation emails again - this time we do not know why.
I have reopened the forum for anonymous posting - let us hope we are not flooded with spam again
We are working on the email problem and hope to solve it shortly
Edit
This is really strange - some email addresses receive mail while some don't - will continue problem solving
Edit 2
Already spam in the forum.....
Edit 3
Lots of spam.
The forum sends mail ok, but due to a problem with DNS some mailservers reject mail from the forum
Clem hopes to solve this in the coming weekend
As soon as registration and activation works reliably again I have to stop anonymous posting. I know how to stop the spammers from registering, but have no solution to stop anonymous spamming

Hi Husse

I am not sure if this is connected with your recent changes or not but i am having problems logging onto the forum

When i tried this morning i got this error message
You exceeded the maximum allowed number of login attempts. In addition to your username and password you now also have to enter the confirm code from the image you see below.
I re tried and this time entered the confirmation code and got the same error as above

Thinking it may have been my fault and using a wrong password etc i then used the I forgot my password, a new password was sent to my email address but again on entering username and password i get the error quoted above

Only way i could get to post was doing it this way, my username on the forum is hippy Thanks Husse for your time :)

Hi Husse

After the 6th try i have now managed to log in okay, please ignore my post above as all appears to be fine now. Probably just needed a little time to settle after my first attempts and the a password request.

@ hippy
There is a time delay of some kind after a number of failed logins
And spam is back - this time lots of <violates forum rules> but until we fix the login permanently we'll have to let the forum be open.....

@Husse

Are the activation emails labelled as "bulk mail"? If so a lot of ISP's
will trash them as spam

No
It's because the DNS server for the mail is the one in Germany that is used for the rest of Mint. Some mailservers don't like that.
At least that's what we believe now - the original problem was a bad configuration - and we tested the forum but not the mail function - we have to apologise for that

We found the error to be a problem with reverse DNS
Mails are sent but Yahoo and a few others still don't receive any mail
Spam is becoming a big problem - we have found a solution but it must be implemented first....
