I see this listed as a bug in launchpad:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/292374
I don't know if this post will help or not, but take a look here:

Good luck. I'll keep looking out for something.

Re: Laptop Overheating Problem...
That's what others have reported as well. I didn't find any fix that worked for many people. A couple indicated that a bios update fixed it. I haven't installed Linux Mint 6 on my HP laptop yet. Reading all of those posts leads me to believe it may not be a good idea. Maybe a test install tomorrow when I can stay awake.

REaper29, give this a try:

I've got a Toshiba L305-S5933 running 64-bit 8.10 and I had the same problem. After much googling, I found this fix that worked for me. Add
Code:
acpi_osi="Linux"
to the kernel boot options in grub. My fan now turns on (low speed) at about 50°C and turns off around 35°C.
Re: Laptop Overheating Problem...
I have an HP Pavilion dv6910us. Once I'm logged-on the fan rpm reduces, to the point where I need to get my ear on the lat top to hear the fan. If the processor I have tried to really task it but the temp hasn't gone much over 55-degrees C. To make monitoring easy, I installed lm-senors and sensors-applet. Then added the hardware montior to gnome panel. most of the time a idle or some email and surfing the temp stays under 39-degrees C. The only thing I've had to do was add "hpet=disable" to the boot line in menu.lst. I needed that because the system stalls on boot without it. There's a post about hpet here:

You can run kde on gnome. If this is working for you I'd keep it. There are many who like k3b for burning CD/DVD media. And Amarok - some would say enough said.
