The debs that Sun provided work just fine for me in Elyssa and I do not have to wait around for Ubuntu to package anything. The instructions I used to install 3.0.1 are listed below.

How To: Install OpenOffice 3.0.1

Firstly, go to the OpenOffice website: http://download.openoffice.org/other.html#en-US and download the Linux .deb file.

Once you have done that, extract the .deb file, OOo_3.0.1_LinuxIntel_install_en-US_deb.tar.gz then you'll see a file called OOO300_m15_native_packed-1_en-US.9379

You can remove the existing version of OpenOffice if you wish with this command: sudo apt-get remove openoffice*.*

Copy and paste OOO300_m15_native_packed-1_en-US.9379 onto the desktop then open Terminal and paste this command: sudo dpkg -i ~/Desktop/OOO300_m15_native_packed-1_en-US.9379/DEBS/*.deb

Then paste this command: sudo dpkg -i ~/Desktop/OOO300_m15_native_packed-1_en-US.9379/DEBS/desktop-integration/openoffice.org3.0-debian-menus_3.0-9376_all.deb

Once you've done that you'll find OpenOffice 3.0.1 in Office

I did have a minor glitch the first time I started OpenOffice, (The OpenOffice welcome screen came up one time.) I have had no problems of any kind since.

Hi exploder,
Yes I used the Sun provided oOo 3.01.
Have now gone back to 2.4 as I dont need any of the "improvements". I read a couple of places that people found oOo3 loaded quicker than oOo2.4, but this wasn't the case on my box either.
No problem, just sticking to whats OK for me.

solar1951, I do not think 3.0.1 loads any quicker either, at least not on my hardware. If OpenOffice loads any quicker it could only be a few milliseconds at best. The newer version is only really useful if you need to deal with newer MS Office documents. If 2.4.1 is doing what you need that is what matters most.

I have a few quick questions...I just installed the Mint6 KDE RC. It has the OO 2.4 with Mint splach screen.

1. If I did the instructions posted in this thread would it be for KDE or Gnome?

2. Would the Mint splash screen be gone?

3. More specifically, which instructions would be best (page 1, or 3 of this thread)? Or use mintinstall, adept?

Thanks, I am fairly new to Mint and DEB packages.

The instructions are the same if you use the ppa repo.

2. Would the Mint splash screen be gone?

If you use the ppa repo then mintDesktop in the Control center has the option to restore the splash but it will say 2.4, (Still better than the Ubuntu one.)

3. More specifically, which instructions would be best (page 1, or 3 of this thread)? Or use mintinstall, adept?

Most seem to prefer just updating from the ppa repo, it is pretty strait forward. Installing OpenOffice from Sun is a little more complicated.

Ok, I just installed it via the first post ppa repo. I'm a bit confused as to what "mintDesktop in the Control center" is? Where is that located? I'm on KDE RC1 so it may be different than Gnome.

Also, no big deal on this one. But where can I find the OO Suite? The one that opens up the OO dialog to open, create new, select Writer, Impress, Calc, etc...? It is missing from the KDE menu.

Thanks

EDIT: I figured out a different way of changing the splash. I downloaded this one http://www.linuxmint-art.org/content/show.php/Mint+OpenOffice+(black)?content=84714

Its not the official mint one. But it is better than saying 2.4 Would anyone be willing to post the 2.4 one? I would have saved it had I known how to change manually. But I I could edit it.

I don't believe Ubuntu packages the OpenOffice Suite, starter page. If it exists it is hidden. Nice choice of splash screen! Looks like you are all set.

Version 3 isn't about groundbreaking improvements, it is about a better user interface.

You can stick with 2.4, but sooner or later you'll want to migrate to version 3.x, version 4, or whatever... and sooner or later you'll want to get familiar with the improved menus.

I've used just about every type of word processors and spreadsheets under the sun, ever since they were invented, from Wordstar and Visicalc to Lotus, Word Perfect, Displaywrite, Volkswriter, Word, Excel, not forgetting Works, and some oddball products from Borland and others I don't remember the names of.

When opening new package for the first time, the learning curve isn't very difficult, as you get used to where to find things, or at least, know what to look for, and where to look for it. In OpenOffice 2.4, many things are most unintuitive, and embedded/hidden in places you wouldn't think of to look for them in. For this reason, I welcomed ooo3, as I was happy they were finally fixing these things.

And promoting/recommending this to new users, I don't need to worry about feeling embarrassed that they may be disappointed or coming over from ms-office feeling too confused. Of course, if you've never used a word processor or spreadsheet in your life, it doesn't matter what version, you need to learn from scratch, but for the rest of us who have used something before, version 2.x went too far in making the menus different from MS- to avoid lawsuits rather than think about the user.

Version 3 is definitely a step in the right direction, and helps make it easier to make the transition for newbies and experienced folk alike.

Yeah, I tried doing the MintInstall update, and I still get the OO 2.4 splash page. Not sure if I successfully updated or not. I suspect not.

Edit: Nevermind. Newbie mistake. You have to use MintUpdate not MintInstall.

I'm not seeing this update. I tried looking in MintInstall and MintUpdate. I did have the OO 3 installed from the instructions on the first page. But I removed it since there is "supposedly" an official one. Hmm, I may reinstall the OO 3 from the ppa repo in the first post.

Open Office 3 is in the sources list but it is commented out. Just remove the # in front of the entry and OO 3 appears in mintInstall.

I think there is a slight problem. This is the first thing I've typed since I ran the upgrade and every word is being underlined by spell checker as misspelled - even words like is, it, and ,the, and a. Must check this further. If it is more than a simple fix, will post in Applications and software.

Went to Open Office Writer and turned off auto-spellcheck. Problem solved. Only misspelled words being underlined.

<EDIT> Sorry, Open Office 3 is in the XFCE sources list but not in the main edition sources list. (Presumably it is also in the KDE and Fluxbox sources lists).

Aging Technogeek,
To fix the spelling error, just open a terminal and reinstall aspell english
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install aspell-en
that should fix the red lines.

garda wrote:Arta,

The error message you see is caused by invalid PGP key (because the content on the PPA server has changed, probably an update has been uploaded). All you have to do is retrieve the key then add it to your apt trusted keyring. You can do this by entering these commands:
Code: Select all
gpg --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-key [KEY_ID]

Since the error message tells you that the missing KEY_ID is 60D11217247D1CFF, the exact command you have to enter is as follows:
Code: Select all
gpg --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv-key 60D11217247D1CFF

That will tell gpg to retrieve the key from keyserver.ubuntu.com. Now you can export the key and save it to a file, in case you need to add it on another installation:
Code: Select all
gpg --export --armor 60D11217247D1CFF > ooo.pgp

Your newly retrieved PGP is now saved to a file called ooo.pgp in your home directory. Then add the key to your trusted keyring using this command:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-key add ooo.pgp

Last thing you will have to do is refresh apt's package information:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update

Done.

Thanks, that helped me.
