wireless connects but still no internet!?

i'm kinda a newbie so no overboard comments please.

i tried the live version of Ubuntu, mint, fedora, mandriva one, etc. all have the same wireless issue.
i have now installed mint

i'm using a dell studio 1537 with the
intel WIFI link 5100 (802.11 a/b/g/n 1x2 1/2 minicard)

in all distros the wireless card recognises signal and networks and it connects and says it is connected. however all the browsers get locked in an infinite cycle of loading nothing with no error message the same with package downloads. only in mandriva did an error message appear.
it said the wireless card worked but some broadcom thing extraneous to the wireless card was wrong.

the mandriva one live said it recognises a Broadcom Corporation
Netlink BCM5784M Gigabit Ethernet PCle that it says won't connect

Hmm, well I have no experience with that card or laptop, but, I for one have always had major trouble with the rtl8187 drivers in all versions of Linux. Basically they would connect, then disconnect and just seemingly disappear from the system.

My solution = Ndiswrapper. Has always worked flawlessly with my laptop and card, so if you cannot get the Linux driver running at a decent pace, I highly recommend you check this out. Actually, Mint 6 (Have no clue about other versions) comes with "Windows Wireless Drivers" pre-installed. If you do use this method, Windows 98 drivers seem to work the best.

I swear, that was the first thing I noticed about Mint when I first booted it up (er, that was earlier today...).

It's such an essential tool for so many people, I really think most distros should include it by default.

am.... searched ndiswrapper all that came up was windows wireless drivers and when i clicked that there were no drivers to select...

Also, that's an odd ping result... It seems you can connect to a server, since you were able to send packets, but are unable to receive any in return...

got my driver from the dell website extracted the inf. file to the root folder and when windows wireless drivers loaded it in it said it was an invalid driver...

nononon won't work. installed this time but now the wireless card does nothing and won't recognise anything. even now when i uninstall the driver the original doesn't eben recognise the network now!!!

You could try using different versions of a Windows driver. Win98 ones usually are the best, but if they dont work, try some others.

all i could find were win xp and vista. do you know a good site for old drivers?

Not the Vista one, but the XP one should work ok

There might not be a Win98 driver, I tried searching for you on Google (where I normally find just about everything I need), but came up with nothing. Like Husse said, try the WinXP driver over the Vista one.
