Re: On-Screen Fonts

Post by SiKing »

Just like every other piece of "your" computer in the Windows world, fonts are proprietary and (probably) owned by Microsoft; you are allowed to only use them for a fee. As such, Linux does not have them. However, Linux does have different fonts installed by default. You are of course free to install any others, and you are of course free to configure Firefox (or any other app) to use which ever fonts you please ...

Download the msttcorefonts package.
It contains the Microsoft fonts.

You can also find segoe-ui vista font here
http://home.arcor.de/salnet/segoe_ui.zip

Unzip and put the ttf files into:
/home/$USERNAME/.fonts/

Also, under desktop preferences, try messing around with the details in Font tab.

In Firefox go to the "Preferences" then seek the fonts config place (my system is in French, it's in the "Content" tab), click on "Advanced..." and choose your fonts (I advise you to use Bitstream Vera or DejaVu or Liberation family fonts) and unclick the "Allow pages to choose their own fonts instead of those chosen above" box. (sorry if my translation of my french menus is not perfect... :) )

The folder is /home/YOUR-USERNAME/.fonts
**YOUR-USERNAME is your personal username.
Download the segoe font .zip from the website i provided.
Copy the extracted ttf file to the above folder.
