It is safe to uninstall mint-meta-main

The description in synaptic states this.
All the packages installed by default in the Main Edition of Linux Mint.
i have uninstalled it myself without any problem. It's function was descibed better in some other post but i can't find it atm.

If you don't remove it you should be able to have all videos open with VLC I think - open up your File Browser and go to Edit > Preferences > Media.

Snaj,
You can use < sudo apt-get -u remove program_name > in the terminal. This will show you exactly what is going to be removed. If you decide you don't want to proceed just hit "n" for no, and it will exit without doing anything.
