Streaming videos

Post by Kaye »

Hey everyone,

I've been having a strange problem with streaming videos ever since I installed Mint (Felicia). When playing a streaming video (YouTube, MegaVideo, The Onion, any of them basically), on occasion (about 75% of the time) at a random point in the video the plugin will freeze and then go black. In order to continue watching, I have to reload the page, then skip forward to where I was in the video, which often causes the same behavior. Sometimes I have to reload the video as many as ten times to get it working again. I don't know if it would be an issue, but I'm using OSS4 for sound. I'm hoping someone's had a similar problem and can help me out? Other than this video problem everything is working quite well really.

Thanks,
Kaye

You could try to reinstall flash.

Code: Select all

apt remove --purge -y flashplugin-nonfree nspluginwrapper

Code: Select all

apt install flashplugin-nonfree

Seems to have worked -- at least for the moment :)

Thanks a lot!

Now a new problem arises!

It seems that flash videos have a much lower volume than everything else on the system. Is there a config I can change to fix this or is the problem deeper than that? (I'm running OSS4 on Felicia, if that matters).

Try to play with some audio controls in OSS Mixer. You can run OSS Mixer by pressing ALT+F2 then enter ossxmix into the box. I recommend creating a launcher that points to /usr/bin/ossxmix for easier access to the mixer.

I actually just fixed this with a little hack.. for some reason, the audio on Flash videos is much lower than the rest of the system (which I don't fully understand), but I configured my media console to raise the volume independently of the oss volume controls, allowing me to raise the volume much more than oss allowed me to. I don't figure it'll hurt the speakers because I don't plan on blasting my music with it, only getting Flash videos to play at a normal volume so I can actually hear them.

Thanks for the help.
