Automated Backup

Post by keithclark »

What is the best way to automatically backup and store that backup file to a network location?

Thanks,

Keith

I give up what is the best way? Sorry I could not resist.
Here are some ideas (that may be as potent as asking which Canadian Hokey team is the best):

Clonezilla
Acronis
FOG
rsync or grsync
Personally I don't know what the best is. I've used Clonezilla and Acronis but not for scheduled backups. The Linux Action Show has video / pod casts that compared so of these utils.

Thanks! And you are correct. I should have just asked for automated backup program suggestions. Not "The Best"!

I was using Simple Backup Suite in Elyssa/Hardy. It is available in the repo's. It seems this package does not work with Mint6/Intrepid. I have started using a package called Back In Time. It is working out really well. You can schedule backups and locate the backup location anywhere on your network.

Where did you get Back in Time from? I tried it from http://www.le-web.org/back-in-time/#repository and the repository did not work for me. It just gave 404 errors.

I downloaded the two deb packages. I did not add the their repository until I read your post. I followed the directions from here http://www.le-web.org/back-in-time/ under the section titled "Ubuntu Hardy & Intrepid repository". When I did a apt-get upgrade my installed version from the deb packages was upgraded.
