Do you use restricted graphic drivers, nvidia, ati?

Try running
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Did you go through it and reboot? it was setting up xorg.conf for you

what happens when you run
sudo dhclient eth0
in terminal

Are you sure your driver is installed correctly? Try to re-install it if not.
