Advantages of 64-bit?

Post by T J Tulley »

Release of the 64-bit edition of Mint-6 is now announced. Is this relevant for me? Are there significant improvements relative to the 32-bit version?

Thanks in advance for advice.

No, not significant. Some people say it seems more peppier, more responsive. Personally I found a much greater improvement after installing the KDE version (I'm using it now). If you have 4Gb+ of memory you would see advantages but for most users 32-bit is plenty good enough.

Sometimes your hardware will decide for you. With the Mint 6 32-bit live CD, my computer rolled over on its side, kicked a couple of times, and died. I had to use "compatibility mode" to resuscitate my machine long enough to get an installation done. Once installed, everything was pretty much smooth sailing.

When the 64-bit version of Mint 6 was released, I ran the RC live CD with absolutely no problems whatsoever. I then installed the final version with the same flawless result. Did I need 64-bit? No, but my machine certainly did. As an aside, I can tell there is a slight enhancement in my video playback. My experiences with 64-bit have been extremely positive. Hopefully, if you need 64-bit, yours will be as well.

I have also had a pretty flawless experience with 64-bit Mint during both install and everyday use. There are little things such as 64-bit flash flaking in Firefox occasionally and certain software will reject your machine entirely but that is due to system architecture, not operating system.

My machine is peppy, stable, and sometimes a little too fast for it's user.
