Ok, now this is going to sound strange... I tested Brasero (0.8.4) on another machine where this RC is installed and I burned this RC ISO on to a DVD-RW disc. Brasero asked whether it should erase the RW media, erased it, and the burn completed successfully and I even booted the machine on the burnt LiveCD and ran a few applications on it. It all seemed to work fine.

Part 2, I tested (un)mounting and ejecting of the DVD-RW media and it worked... Then I tried with a USB flash drive and I got an error saying an application was still using the drive. However, after maybe a minute or so, I could eject the drive without problems. It even disappeared from the Thunar side bar. I tried this quite a few times. Sometimes (2 or 3 times out of 10 maybe) the 'drive in use error' would come up but after some time it would unmount without problems.

Is there something we are doing differently?

I didn't try xfburn... The machine didnt have an internet connection at the time.

shane,
I am using external USB optical drive. Maybe this fact makes the difference for Brasero? Will post the rest later.

Brasero (0.8.4)
I'm surprised it worked - it has always failed for me (in main) and ask exploder about it :)

I've asked Merlwiz for his opinion on the Brasero and Thunar volume management issues... since I am using his work on the XFCE CE for this release.

Merlwiz uploaded a new version of slim to the community repos. Can you please upgrade to his latest version and test it.

I made fresh install, update & upgrade to make sure my problems are reproducible.

Unfortunately, Fn-Up to change the brightness locks the keyboard, as described above.

The output, as requested:

For me it was strange that in the first output i915 is listed, while the notebook has the Intel 855 graphics controller, the predecessor of Intel 915.

BTW, the problems with Brasero for me are very similar to the ones I experience also in the latest xfce edition.

@.ee: I found this on launchpad... It seems to be an upstream issue. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/285323 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/273468 Does switching to a VT and back to X fix the keyboard problem?

Merlwiz's feedback about Brasero was that it works better than xfburn for him. "I can't even get xfburn to burn a dvd. On one drive it keeps saying the disc is full and on the other it crashes the app."

I messaged the creator of Elfin2, the theme we are using. Hopefully we can fix the readability issues with his help.

Yes, CTRL + ALT + F6 and CTRL + ALT + F7 "solves" the issue with the brightness regulation. The symptoms described in the links above are identical to mine.

I just tried Protech-one specialized linux distribution which also uses Fluxbox. Somehow their default desktop and menu design is more appealing to me, and somehow similar to yours at the same time. Maybe you just have a look to get new ideas. Also their small monitoring tool in the left bottom is very sweet and practical (don't know which program they use there).

I wish we had the resources to maintain our own repos... Then we would probably have less of these regressions... They are quite irritating. Like for my laptop, in Intrepid, Suspend started working while Hibernate stopped... and my wireless card gives now keeps losing signal. I am using the b43 driver which I see you are using as well. Are you facing any problems with your wireless card?

The only thing of note so far is that after login I am left with a full screen window open, called "unnamed" and containing the default wallpaper. Which I have to manually close.

Oh and logout now fails, just hangs on a blank desktop. CTRL+ALT+BKSP takes me to CLI login only.

Maybe I should have mentioned that you should accept all the changes that the new package makes to the config files. Try reinstalling Slim and accepting the changes.

Can you paste the contents of /etc/slim.conf

Also delete the ~/.fluxbox folder to get a clean start.

If this fails, delete ~/.fluxbox then press F1 in the Slim log in screen till you see startmintfluxbox (NOT startfluxbox) and then log in.

Hi shane

Hopefully this is helping you find a bug and not me wasting your time... :)

I did accept changes to slim on updating the packages..

I have since deleted slim.conf and reinstalled it, I have deleted .fluxbox and I have done F1 to get a new startmintfluxbox session (all a few times now).

here is my slim.conf (it seems to be new as it no longer has my auto login changes I had made)

Code: Select all

Your slim.conf looks OK... the default Fluxbox startup file should be restored after you deleted it... Did you reboot after upgrading Slim? I can't think of anything else really...

Quoted from the Intrepid release notes: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/release ... %20default
Atheros ath5k wireless driver not enabled by default

The version of the ath5k driver for Atheros wireless devices included in Linux 2.6.27 interferes with the use of the madwifi driver for some wireless devices and as a result has been disabled by default. Many Atheros chipsets will work correctly with the madwifi driver, but some newer chipsets may not, and the madwifi driver may not work with WPA authentication. If you have an Atheros device that does not work with madwifi, you will want to install the linux-backports-modules-intrepid-generic package, which includes an updated version of the ath5k driver. While not installed by default, this linux-backports-modules-intrepid-generic package is included on the Ubuntu 8.10 CD and DVD images for ease of installation.
Of course this package is not present on our ISO... but does this solution work for you? I can include this driver on the ISO if it does.
Yes, this solution works. I used the backports module in the Xfce CE and have updated the kernel a few times since and AR5007EG just works by default now. I am happy I do not have to keep rebuilding it anymore. BTW it is only Ubuntu that has withheld this kernel mod, every other distro with a 2.6.27+ kernel now recognizes these atheros chips right out of the box.

I have an AR5007EG in this laptop and it worked fine when F10 was released, but that means little in Fedora terms.

It might have been a network manager problem though, I am not sure as I have been out of the loop on Fedora. Have you tried any other distros?

At any rate, I hope Mint is working for you. I cursed Ubuntu silly for leaving this out of the kernel, but the fix is not bad. And it has worked flawlessly since. Kind of puts the damper on using the live CD though.

I found the "unnamed" picture comes after a package upgrade - so that is not a bug it is me breaking things ;)

These are the changes I made - I can't see what would cause the problem...

I have now reinstalled and not done any Package Upgrades.

2 bugs persist.

1) Unable to unmount USB drive (error and instant remount)

2) even though I can boot and all is well I see this message briefly before my desktop

Code: Select all

kinit no resume image

When the system is up I can logout via GUI but CTRL+AL+BKSP does not work, I get the above message and am stuck at CLI login.

..

Apart from these I am having a nice time one FeliciaFlux :)

I note on my new install that Mint Update checks for updates and shows system is up to date, but if I open mint update I see lots of updates (one for mintinstall) some level 2's and some 3's. It is a little odd that the sys tray showed the system as up to date.

and re all my problems, here are my details...

I cant figure why. Any suggestion?
Can you please try this... Maybe we can find out what exactly this is.

1. Reboot, login or however you can reproduce this unnamed window.

2. Press Ctrl+F2 to bring up the Run dialog

3. Run this command (replace username with your username)

Code: Select all

ps aux | grep username > ps-out1
4. Close this unnamed window... If there is no close button on it, Press Ctrl+Alt+Escape to run xkill (the cursor changes to an X) and click on the window to close it.

5. Press Ctrl+F2 to bring up the Run dialog

6. Run this command (replace username with your username)

Code: Select all

ps aux | grep username > ps-out2
7. Post the contents of ps-out1 and ps-out2 which will be in your home folder

Thanks.
