You've easily observed that with few and sparse mirrors, Mint's repos are more easily affected by various internet vaguaries and fluxities. More mirrors,more servers, with higher quality bandwidth and better load-sharing, and you wouldn't have noticed this.

I'd say Mint manages to do pretty darn good, starting from something that Clem basically rolled on his own at home.
