I would suggest if you don't have a problem with non-free software you use the non-free version. I think it is more polished and I have had fewer problems with it. Un-install whatever you have now and follow the directions below in a terminal.

sudo su

echo "deb http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/debian intrepid non-free" >> /etc/apt/sources.list

apt-get update

apt-get -u install virtualbox-2.1

Follow the installation instructions and you should have a successful install.
