S/PDIF digital optical not working but works in kubuntu

Post by NiksaVel »

Hey guys,

I have this new HTPC of mine... and I have it connected via digital optical to my amp... I cant get it to make any sound whatsoever... it's driving me crazy..,. I have installed mint 6 over a previous install of kubuntu 8.10 which had sound working no prob...

harware still works okay, tested by dual booting to xp.

I have no idea what to do??? I have every bar maxed out and unmuted in gnome-alsamixer as well as ac3 passthrough set in totem and amarok

no sound.

Please help! I don't want to go back to kubuntu, it sucks :(

Windows is extremely fast after a fresh install. If you want to make it stay that way: - don't use it.

Hey NiksaVel
Long time no see
Is it HDA7 or higher?
Then perhaps this is something
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... sa#p107982
It's really odd how this solves a lot of problems with ICH sound (ICH can't use pulse audio "afaik")
Edit
Your own "solution answer" appeared while I was writing this :)

hell... I spent the entire freaking Sunday trying to get sound to work on mint (S/PDIF optical out sound that is), while on kubuntu, which is supposed to be the same version everything (8.10 intrepid) it works out of the box... kinda strange no?

I got sound now that I've updated alsa, but it's not workign properly... I don't get any surround sound - until I execute

Code: Select all

sudo alsa force-reload
than it works perfectly...

before only stereo, and if I try to play dolby surround only silence. But I have to execute it after every system start... unacceptable. Reading through that thread I mentioned now to try and find some kind of solution... :/

If anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it... I don't have much knowledge of linux sound infrastructure... but it seems like improperly configured surround sound that gets properly reset after the force-reload command...

You could add

Code: Select all

alsa force-reload
to /etc/rc.local
Gets executed at every boot
And sound is a mess - more or less - now
I have no idea why it works here but not there or the opposite - it's as much sound just works in Mint but not *buntu as the other way round
