No sound on Mint 6; AC97 Intel 82801 on-board card

Post by kbow1 »

Hello All -

I am brand new to the Linux scene, and so far I am really enjoying the OS and community. I am, however, experiencing a problem with enabling sound on my machine. I have read through many posts here searching for an answer and have also googled the issue ad nauseum, so I apologize if there is already a solution floating around the forums somewhere. Below is a quick synopsis of my hardware so my problem can be more easily diagnosed. (I also tried Ubuntu 8.10 and had no sound there either, which is why I switched to Mint in the first place, which I am now glad that I did. Mint seems far more user friendly!)

I have a 3 year old Gateway 4540gz laptop. I ran 'lspci' in a terminal window to pull up my hardware configuration as it is recognized by Mint. Mint seems to recognize my onboard sound, but I haven't heard a peep from my machine yet. Also, I have checked and double checked that my sound is not muted and I have chosen the appropriate (so far as I know) ALSA sound device in my media player. Your help will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Sound should be supported for your hardware
One thing immediately caught my attention and that's the modem
It has to be on to get sound - check that first
One thing that's always hard to find is the age of things especially things like chipsets but this must be at least five years old
ICH4 appeared in the beginning of the decade.....
And thanks for having (almost) all the details needed - I think you only forgot to tell us which Mint (exactly) you have

Well I am glad that my hardware is supported. To answer your question, I am running Mint 6 Felicia, which was the latest release at the time when I downloaded it last week. What exactly do I need to do to ensure that my modem is on? I am assuming that you are referring to the 56k phone modem, right?

Thanks again for the help!

Yes - look at these two lines
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03)
00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 03)
You see that both sound and modem is AC97 - they share components
I think there is a switch somewhere for the modem - it can be in the bottom or on a side

When you say "switch" are you referring to a setting in Mint?

No a "physical" switch on the laptop, generally placed at the bottom

I do not see a physical switch for toggling the 56k modem on and off. I do have the option of toggling the wireless on an off using a keyboard Fn button combo, but that is it. This is actually my wife's computer and to the best of my knowledge she has never even used the modem. The modem driver was not even installed in Windows XP until you let me know that the modem could be causing my sound troubles.

Could any of these sound troubles stem from booting Mint from a USB (persistent)? Thanks again for all of your help and input.

It might be the cause but I don't think so
Let me ponder this for a while

I decided to backtrack and install Mint 5 (downloaded from linuxmint.com) to see if that would solve my problems. I am sorry to say that it did not. I still do not have any sound whatsoever coming from my machine. As far as I can tell, all of my sound settings are correct and nothing is muted. I'm bummed because I really like the OS, but without sound I am stuck with XP. I will be reinstalling Mint 6 because I would just assume have the latest version if possible.

Thanks again for looking into this for me!
