Bug: Problem with Clamav and Freshclam Anti-Virus

Post by Bobo-the-Cat »

I have installed Clamav and freshclam and Clamav works well when you right-click on files or folders and select "Scan for Viruses" from the context menu. But of course, you need to update the database periodically using the command: sudo freshclam from a terminal.

When I do this, I get the following message in the terminal:-

xxxx@insp530 ~/Desktop $ sudo freshclam

The Clamav website: http://www.clamav.net/support/faq states that you must be running the latest version of the scanner. But the scanner is updated via the Linux Mint Update. So it would seem that there is a problem / mismatch in the versions of Clamav and Freshclam that are provided by the Mint respository. The result is that my scans will always be done with the same database that is getting increasingly out of date!

So :-

1) How to I get Freshclam to do its update now?
2) Will Linux Mint provide a solution via Mint Update in the near future that fixes this?

Ignore it. It is not a bug or a problem. It is just that they have released a new version that has not been 'translated' into .deb format yet. It will be soon enough.

Hi,

Well I have just downloaded the latest version 0.94 from the Linux Mint repository using Mint Update. After a restart, I now get the following errors:-

ClamAV update process started at Tue Apr 14 11:08:39 2009
WARNING: Your ClamAV installation is OUTDATED!
WARNING: Local version: 0.94.2 Recommended version: 0.95.1

WARNING: getpatch: Can't download daily-9232.cdiff from database.clamav.net

These errors are different, but I still cannot get the latest database. Please can you tell me when this is going to be sorted? Should not the Linux Mint repository have all the correct
versions of the various components of ClamAV so that they all download at the same time so it will work?

0.95 is only available on Ubuntu Jaunty at the moment. Felicia is based on Intrepid. So it is up to date. If it bothers you that much you will either have to run a development version of Ubuntu or install it fromhttp://packages.ubuntu.com but there is no guarantee it will work
