Live install on USB Flash drive & Updates?

Post by kcegginton »

I am successfully running Linux Mint 6 a persistent 'install' on a USB flash drive (as per PenDriveLinux instructions) and I love it. I have also installed several additional apps with no problem. I am, however, not yet quite ready to commit to making my laptop dual-booting and doing a full install.

My question is this: what should I do about the 274 recommended updates that MintUpdate tell me are available? Can I install them without breaking the Live install? If I do, will they eat up my USB flash drive space? Will they slow down boot-up time (which I think is getting longer each time I install a new app)?

Cheers,

Ken

If you run a pen drive version of the live CD which I think you do you can't really update even if it's persistent
This is because Mint is still one big file that is unpacked during boot and you can't (well...) add the updates

Thanks - that's about what I thought. I just wasn't sure whether the contents of the flash drive had been de-archived or not.

I guess I'll have to go for a full install if I want to keep up-to-date.

I have not studied the pendrivelinux.com solutions closely
On a glance it seems that a loop mounted casper is used which is far more advanced than when I studied this some time ago.
This cares for updates to be saved and is about the same method as in mint4win
I was wrong when I answered with older solutions in mind - you find a few in the how to section of the forum.
So it depends on which method is being used
I apologise
