Use Debians language (l10n) packs

Post by KAMiKAZOW »

Today, I gave Mint KDE in VirtualBox a try. Sadly, it is the same disappointing experience as Kubuntu, even though you guys claim to do it better than (K)Ubuntu.

This is Kubuntu:

This is Mint:

By comparison, this is how it should look like:

Debian's KDE l10n packages also work under Kubuntu according to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... comments/4 and I can confirm this.
If you want to be better than Kubuntu, you should at least bundle Debian's l10n KDE packages and offer a hugely smoother KDE experience to international users.

We try to have a complete translation and while this is an interesting idea it only covers part of the translations
We actually always (?) test german and french

thanks for the heads up.
I just noticed that there are kde-l10n-* localisation files in the ubuntu reops.
and also openoffice ones.

adding new packages goes against our RC package adding/updating policy.

So it most likely will not be added for the final but will be in Mint 7 KDE CE.
This will be added as a know bug and fix for the final at least though.

Now where was i going? Oh yes, crazy!

When these work better than the default packages, why don't you use those?

A release candidate is for uncovering major bugs. Completely broken language packages (according to the Ubuntu bug report all other non-English languages are also affected) are a major bug IMHO.

A RC is an almost complete version and has passed code freeze
Only minor changes can be made to it
If major changes are made we have to start the process all over again which will take a long time
We have to make sure it's stable
That's why some changes have to wait until the next version or sometimes come as an update
I don't know how major this is, but if we were not so late already it might have been considered as an addition

How did this giant mess even enter RC stage???

BTW: A new (K)Ubuntu release is about to happen soon anyway. IMHO you should better just scrap the messy v6 altogether and concentrate on v7.
Mint claims to be polished and elegant. With those language packs it's neither.

Mr KAMiKAZOW
It's taken months to make something useable out of the KDE 4 mess
A "missing" language pack for some but not all translations is hardly something that makes this version a mess
We have every intention of making Gloria KDE much better and released much sooner now that the basic work has been done

Don't blame others for your faults. Distros like openSUSE or Chakra/Arch have perfectly working KDE 4.2 versions.
