Cheese cannot detect my integrated webcam SOLVED

Post by mscatamaran »

i have a dell inspiron 1521 laptop with an integrated webcam

i currently have cheese 2.24 with a crumby screen resolution of176x144 on LM Felicia (paling in comparison with what I had under XP: some low quality Dell Creative Webcam program). When I went back to Linux from XP, I chose Cheese because I remembered it being so good when I had Linux the first time (Ubuntu Hardy Heron)....

well i launched Cheese earlier today and now it says it cannot detect my camera. First I had cheese with crappy resolution and now I have no webcam. please help...

You have to tell us more facts.
The minimum is exactly which Mint you have - which version and which edition (main or any of the CEs)
We also need to know a bit about all your hardware.
Run " lspci " in a terminal and post here (to avoid misunderstanding - the first character is a minor L and you copy by marking with the mouse and then right click)
Some wifi and possibly built in sound can be connected to USB even if they are internal - if you suspect you have one of these run " lsusb " in a terminal.
Also tell us if this is using mint4win or not, quite important
The ID of the webcam is important

about my webcam id: how do i figure that out (if the name is just what you're looking for, then its a Creative Webcam\Dell Webcam Manager, it came with my laptop)... sorry about my ignorance with all this, its still pretty new to me.

also if i had mint4win where would i find it?

This
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 05a9:2640 OmniVision Technologies, Inc.
is the webcam - as you see not exactly Dell

i did all the stuff that other post said to do and it seems to be working (as well as it was before having the camera detection problems).... thanks!

but how can i increase the screen resolution? When ever I try it goes blank and freezes then i have to restart cheese and put it back to the 174x144... Do you know how small that is, its pretty much silly to try to take pictures because then I have to stretch them and then they pixelate....

What's the resolution of the webcam?
Maybe that small - I know I've seen figures in that range
