I just bought it (the Windows XP version) ... it was sold at a special price and the version I got has the "Version 2.0" patches and some special "Bala Gi Research Missions" included ... whatever this means. Is there a way to have this working under Linux, e.g. via WINE or via Cedega??

aside from the very in depth playability it is also one of the most graphically beautiful and impressive games I've ever played... looking forward to seeing this kind of quality games on linux... hope it will help push other developers in the same line of thinking :)

Scorp... no idea if it will run via wine, but knowing the graphics that it utilises, and the way that wine usually screws up graphics, I'd say it would be a sin to play it non-native....
Windows is extremely fast after a fresh install. If you want to make it stay that way: - don't use it.

I'm a huge fan of the "Independence War" (I-War) series. "Independence War 2 - Edge of Chaos" is a bit disappointing story- and feature-wise in its default setting but it can be vastly enhanced with a ton of mods that drastically improve everything. And you got to love Newtonian physics and the incredible and crazy maneuvers you can fly in mid-space, e.g. fly backwards and shoot enemies behind you with your front cannons, evade missiles by dodging them, and so on... :D

I hope X3 is similar in that regard ... I found some interesting mods that supposedly greatly enhance the game.

I gave it some extensive try (been playing X3 all evening ...) and I am a bit disappointed! It runs extremely slow on my P4 2.8 GHz system (Independence War 2 runs fast like hell here!) and the ships are ridiculously sloooooow :? They move so slow as if they were crawling through thick molasses and not floating through the emptiness of space.

OMFG ... take IW2 for comparison: here I can accelerate a battleship in reasonable time, turn it around it's own axis and have my front cannons destroy an enemy convoy before most of their escorts can even react. X3 feels like "EVE Online" on big amounts of valium :?

Really ... I expected a bit more :?

Ah come on. X3 doesn't even have Newtonian physics ... The "Independence War" series has. What made Babylon 5 so special was that they tried hard to make space battles 'realistic', e.g. fighters could spin around and shoot at the enemies behind them flying "backwards", then spin around again and make strafing runs against capital ships by turning their fighter 90 degrees and have their cannons fire salvo after salvo at the enemy ship during the fly-by.

I can do all these maneuvres (and many many more!) in "Independence War 2". My last ship there was --thanks to a mod-- a Centauri Battle Cruiser  ... Hell of a lot of fun if you jump with that beast right on top of a convoy

But X3? Come on. It's way overrated in my opinion. At least the flight model totally sucks. And a 'Babylon 5' without a Newtonian flight model can hardly be fun.

Star Trek annoyed the crap out of me because of their "fighter plane" flying (with the notable exception of Wrath of Khan) I could forgive Star Buck being a (very sexy...I wonder if that was a coincidence?) woman because the of Newtonian physics lol :D
Starbuck?? That's "Battlestar Galactica". But yes, there too they use Newtonian physics and do fun-stuff like flying sideways and hammering enemy ships with their frontal cannons during the fly-by (e.g. episode "Resurrection Ship" where a few human "Viper" fighters completely toast the huge Cylon "resurrection ship" with a fly-by strafing attack ...)

Don't be too sure  ... I have some evil tricks up my sleeve.
