I can't speak for all the different laptop makes out there, but I did have a Dell Inspiron laptop for awhile that had Ubuntu 64-bit running on it for a long time. It had 4GB of RAM and ran flawlessly.

Fujitsu Celsius H 270 quad core, 8GB Ram DDR3, Nvidia Quadro FX (Certified for 3D CAD) 1680x1050 and 1920x1200 resolution - It works like a charm, running LM 5 XFCE Edition, since version 6 is a bit flakey...

Have you looked at the offerings from System 76 yet? http://www.system76.com/

When I need another unit, I am seriously giving System 76 consideration.
