Install KDE on Gnome Install - Felicia
I currentlly have the Main Mint 6 edition installed on my laptop. I have been trying for about 2 hours to figure out how to get the new mint KDE installed alongside my current Gnome, so I can choose between either desktop at login. I would rather not have to install the KDE version and then install mintdesktop-main because I like the way my Gnome is setup already. I read about allowing ppa in the package manager, but I couldn't figure it out. Does anyone understand how to allow a repository with the Mint KDE desktop or a command I can use?
Thanks in advance,
Rob

Re: Install KDE on Gnome Install - Felicia
First of all - the only way to get Mint KDE CE is to install it
You can install KDE
but that will get you KDE 4.1 which is buggy and the road to KDE 4.2 is long and winding
You can install KDE
Code: Select all
apt install kdebase
Re: Install KDE on Gnome Install - Felicia
So, if I do the reverse and install KDE CE, then I could install mintdesktop-gnome and have both? Will mintdesktop-kde (4.2) never be in the repositories?
Re: Install KDE on Gnome Install - Felicia
You see KDE 4.2 is still only available in PPA repositories (which means more or less beta or even alpha)
You could install KDE and then the gnome package (and I don't know what it's called ) and then the metapackage for main

The OP has Mint 6 which means that the KDE in his/her repositories is KDE4abushcrafter wrote:What About kde3?
Re: Install KDE on Gnome Install - Felicia
How is that, exactly? Felicia-KDE used 4.2, but 4.2 is _not_ in the repositories?Husse wrote:You see KDE 4.2 is still only available in PPA repositories (which means more or less beta or even alpha)

I've been using the PPA repos for months and have never had any problems, but maybe that's just dumb luck.
Resistance [to Linux] is futile.
Re: Install KDE on Gnome Install - Felicia
...Also, since M6-KDE was just recently released will M7-KDE be skipped or is Boo working on that already?

Re: Install KDE on Gnome Install - Felicia
The Gloria KDE CE is indeed being worked on, there are at least a few of the mint packages in the repos already!
Re: Install KDE on Gnome Install - Felicia
The reason Feleica KDE was so late is KDE 4 and the work that had to be done to iron out the worst
So Gloria KDE should come much sooner after main

Re: Install KDE on Gnome Install - Felicia
Oh I definitely understand M6's delay. I was merely suggesting that since it was so recent maybe you could skip M7; it's not the Main version after all.Husse wrote:The reason Feleica KDE was so late is KDE 4 and the work that had to be done to iron out the worst

Re: Install KDE on Gnome Install - Felicia
Just download the old Felicia KDE installer or wait for the Glori@!
Re: Install KDE on Gnome Install - Felicia
Don't worry - Boo has already been working on Gloria KDE for a while
Re: Install KDE on Gnome Install - Felicia
Please, don't skip this compilation: M7 KDE x64. Many people preffers KDE, and uses an 64 bit processor.Don't worry - Boo has already been working on Gloria KDE for a while
As we know Ubuntu and Kubuntu; our priority is make four common versions:
- Gloria Mint 64
Gloria Mint 32
Gloria Mint 64 KDE
Gloria Mint 32 KDE
Unfortunately, I never saw nobody using Xfce

Hey WildSioux,
I have the desktop theme as Tragedy, Style Oxygen; Colors Peace; Windows Ozone and Icons LinuxMint. I haven't as yet uninstalled any Gnome stuff. The only question I have (besides not knowing what exactly to remove) is whether I want to keep up with Gnome and KDE updates since I rarely switch to Gnome. I wonder though if some of the Gnome applications might come in handy
