audigy 2 zs, no sound

Post by starwind »

Hi, I just installed Linux Mint and my sound was working at first but after updating my system it stopped. I thought about rolling back the update(if you can, I don't see how) but when I reboot I get the start up sound at the login screen. It seems I just don't have sound once I get to the desktop. Any pointers? :(

You have to tell us more facts.
The minimum is exactly which Mint you have - which version and which edition (main or any of the CEs)
We also need to know a bit about all your hardware.
Run " lspci " in a terminal and post here (to avoid misunderstanding - the first character is a minor L and you copy by marking with the mouse and then right click)
Some wifi and possibly built in sound can be connected to USB even if they are internal - if you suspect you have one of these run " lsusb " in a terminal.
Also tell us if this is using mint4win or not, quite important
This is a standard answer so it may not be fully applicable to your situation

Linux Mint 6 (main) through mint4win
I thought it might be PulseAudio from other things I was reading so I tried disabling/removing it and going back to Alsa but it's still not working so I'm not sure if I made it worse or not. >_>

Can you turn off the built in AC97 sound?
If you turn off the modem that will turn off the AC97 as well
It may be conflicting in some way after the update you made
If this does not help run

Code: Select all

lspci -vvnn
Then post the ID you find for the audigy - its within brackets like [123a:b589]
I get too many hits with just audigy and I think there are several revisions

I don't know how to turn it off, sorry. I could take the modem out if that would help. Thanks for all the help so far. I can't believe I'm able to get AWN and Conky working but I can't get something like sound to work . >:(

You have the right driver in use
Kernel driver in use: EMU10K1_Audigy
Kernel modules: snd-emu10k1
Can you check in mintUpdate if the emu10k1 was updated?
Depends on if you have a recent enough version of mintUpdate

It doesn't list emu10k1 any where in the update history.

Well by sheer curiosity I got it working, lol. I unplugged my speaks from the audigy card trying different ports in it but didn't work. I did however get lots of crackling noise. ^_^ Then I tried plugging it into the integrated intel sound in the motherboard and BAM! sound!!!!!!! Only slightly annoying thing is swapping between Mint and WinXP since I also swap between the audigy card for winXP and the intel sound for Mint. It works tho. :D
