Subsequent updates of MintSystem revert the changes to /etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults/%gconf-tree.xml as expected so a more permanent solution might be to simply replace the default image. Then again, another update may also replace the images in /usr/share/backgrounds though I'd wager it's less likely to occur (if at all) than a MintSystem update.
