How easy can it get?
Hello I'm gona' get on of these real soon now and was wondering what Model you have?

My next project is Myth TV and a recommendation of a Card would be a help - RGDS

wbee,

try this:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/options

then for my card which is a compro dvbt300 I add to the bottom:

# My TV Card
options saa7134 card=70 tuner=67

Change the card and tuner #;s to suit your card.
Then save the file and restart your pc.

Hope this helps.

I have the Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1600, and am thinking about switching my media PC over to Mint 6. How do I find out which number to plug into the "tuner" variable?

Is there a better way to get the tuner working besides the em28xx drivers? I have Gloria on my PC.
Thanks, Laszlo

Re: List of support TV tuner card on Linux mint and How to

My advice would be don't waste your time on TV cards in Linux unless it is a hobby for you that you enjoy spending time on.
That's a pretty long list of supported cards to make that statement, though maybe you're just trolling.

Just because Linux doesn't load every module from the start doesn't really mean a card isn't supported. If Linux loaded a boat load of random un-needed drivers at boot time we would have to start calling it Windows.

All anyone needs to do is spend 5 minutes researching cards that are well supported in Linux and they can then just skip all the bs and be perfectly happy watching TV in Linux.
Every current kernel supports this card and it, along with Myth TV is pretty awesome IMO.

Having said all of that though, Anyone who wants to make a PC a media center is obviously doing it because they enjoy tinkering whether or not they're running Linux. Otherwise they'd just buy a Tivo and get on with it.

Easy, widespread TV card support is a couple of years away at least. Currently you will need good command line skills to iron out all the problems. To me this does not quallify as "working". This kind of universal hardware support is what you pay microsoft for when you buy XP or Vista.

Universal does not mean only that which is supported by us, it means all (dictionary..)

OK very interesting but what does it all mean?
I have a Leadteck card with a connexant cx8800 chipset that is found but not recognised. I get get a list of possible options with card=# but I don't have a /etc/modules.conf nor anything else that has a lot to do with dvb-t.
dmesg suggests insmod with card=# option. What is that? How do I get the module to load? How do I get to even have a modules.conf file? What little hair I have left is rapidly receding.
Help :x

Unfortunately I can only find one Conexant entry above (tuner=44 - Philips 4 in 1 (ATI TV Wonder Pro/Conexant)) and that is not your card
This is the closest to a solution I have found

Yes - now Broadcom is releasing a Linux driver (STA) and it works very well - that is something to hope for for other hardware

Does anyone know if the Norwood(walk) TV card is supported? In Zapping and XawTV I can get static but no sound or picture. I don't know if that means anything. I see a video1 device under /dev but I don't know if that's standard or not. Would I look under Administration off the menu to find a list of installed boards Mint sees? I was able to use this card in the past with Windows XP but it's been a couple of years and I bought it probably 5 years ago.

I found an old forum topic about Norwood Micro PCI TV Tuner PRO Card
Everything seems to be old when I search for Norwood....

WOW Thank you Husse! I'll read that thread and give it a shot. I haven't heard of that site before. What a great community, thank you for finding that, my searches hadn't turned up much to this point. My card is identical, the cheapo Norwood from CompUSA from years ago, just like the OP in that message. I'll post my results here.

OHHH what an adventure. I found I'm using the cx8800 (or cx88xx?) Conextant chip. I created a cx8800.conf (or cx88xx.conf) file under /etc/modprobe.d and I've been using modprobe to remove and reload the cx8800 or cx88xx kernel modules and then checking dmesg for info. At one point a list of possible cards was presented and lo and behold Norwood Micro is on it at #54 for the card. I set that up in the .conf file I made (above) and dmesg reports modprobe (insmod) set the card on /dev/video0 using the v4l2 driver.

I get static! I can also change the static when I turn the vcr/tv button on and off on the vcr the cable signal goes through before the card. It changes, but it's still static.

Question 1: Is it my tuner that I need to play with or the card or both? I think I have the right card now but I've read on the net today someone had success with tuner 39, another with tuner 46. Any ideas what tuner # for an old Norwood Micro board or what range of tuners maybe?

Question 2: TvTime still won't even open or flashes so fast I don't see it. Zapping TV has been what I've been testing with. If I don't load the cx88'00' (no quotes), Zapping says it can't find anything on /dev/video0. But I've read elsewhere that it's the cx88'xx' I should be playing with. Any ideas? I'm going with cx8800 for now since Zapping likes it and I get "static" at least.

UPDATE: I GOT IT TO WORK! I used the following in my cx88xx.conf file that I created under /etc/modprobe.d/

Add these lines:
alias char-major-81 cx8800
options cx8800 video_nr=0 radio_nr=0
options cx88xx card=54 tuner=39

Then save the file and run "sudo modprobe -r cx8800" to unload the driver, then "sudo modprobe cx8800" to reload it. Run "dmesg" to view the results. It helps to run "dmesg -c" before you start to clear the log so the only entries will be from your reloading of the cx8800 module.

The missing key was I needed to set a channel in the TV software. Earlier I didn't see a non grayed-out way to do that. I think once the card was set though, that option may have opened up. I set it to US Cable-irc, clicked "import all channels" (again using Zapping tv). Zapping organizes the channels into blocks of 20 on the rt-click context menu. I can even use the remote to mute or change volume for it or the whole system depending on whether I use the soundcard mixer at /dev/mixer or the kernel sound at /dev/dsp. Just wish I could change channels with the remote hmmm....

Hope this helps someone. @GrumpyOldMan, I think you have the same card I do, these settings may work for you.

ugh spoke too soon. I found a window up on my box Friday that said updates were available (over 100mbs of various). They seemed to be ok from what I read on the list and I installed them. Then I noticed my tv tuner card no longer worked. I played around with installing BTTV and the other TV programs. I can get a screen to come up in TVTime now but no sound. I can get static in XAW TV and Zapping still works the best, HOWEVER the resolution isn't as good with a slight static line down the center and the remote doesn't work at all anymore. I've checked connections in the back and they're good. I see a remote control entry in the control center and the test at the bottom responds to most button there BUT it will not work with Zapping TV any longer. I've noticed now that the mouse wheel on my MS trackball changes channels and if I press it, it mutes, weird. The remote control area of control center shows two "power button" remotes with identical names. I think maybe it's confused and has assigned functions to the trackball but neither of the "power button" entries works in the remotes sections in restoring those functions to the actual remote. I also think from what I've read that the bttv is for older contexant drivers prior to the CX23880 which I have and I know the 2.6 kernel has the driver built in for the CX2388X chip so maybe BTTV isn't something I need. I didn't need it before.

Anyone have experience with TV programs and getting IR remotes to work in Linux? I've verified lirc is installed and in the devices file shows an entry as Norwood Micro IR.
