Did you try installing through synaptic?
If it doesn`t work. Try removing everything related to pidgin you have and then try installing again.

First make sure pidgin is uninstalled.
Then add the applet "search for files" in your panel. Type pidgin and a list should appear. Delete everything in this list and make a fresh install of pidgin.

You could also try the command to make sure that all of the config files etc. have been deleted.
