this looks like a know bug in edgy.

are you setting up a multi boot system? or all linux mint?
were you putting grub in hd0?
you could try putting it in /dev/hda, it is the same as hd0.

just to clarify:
your primary master is sda with vista
your secondary master is hdb, where mint is to go.
are you installing the kde or gnome version of mint?
now when you install does the installer call hdb, hdb or does it call it hda?
i have seen crazy changes between the bios and os to do with disks and devices.

you could test using mint (gnome).
the kde disk partitioner (qtparted) is a bit flaky.
You should be able to put kde mint and xp on the same disk sda quite easily.
Are you putting partitions on the IDE disk?
how do you want to setup your disks/partitions?
there could be a problem with your cd.
