after re-checking /boot/grub/menu.lst 3 re-boot s later, to my surprise no more
root=/dev/sd.. anywhere. and folder /dev/disk also gone.

I'm assuming that is new in Feisty:-)
I've heard something to that effect.
BTW uuid is a horrible thing - they can change suddenly and unexpectedly :(
