Internal Microphone issues
I'm using the main edition of Mint 7 on an HP Pavilion dv9700, and I just set my sound to work through esound instead of pulseaudio (if that matters). My internal microphone doesn't seem to be working, as I noticed recently in Skype. Can anyone help me find a driver or solution?
I'm still relatively new to any Linux distro, so I'm sorry if I'm not posting something else that could help find the source of the problem. If that's the case, ask me what you need to know, and I'll supply it.
Thanks in advance!
EDIT: I have additional information that might help...
When I go into volume control, check everything in the preferences, and click on the 'recording' tab, the microphone icon has a red x over it. However, when I click to get rid of the red x, exit the volume control, and re-enter the volume control, the red x is back. For some reason, I can't enable the microphone.
My microphone seemed to be using "conexant high definition smartaudio" according to Windows.

Re: Internal Microphone issues
try:
right-click on speaker icon on bottom bar;
Open Volume Control;
Preferences;
there will be a host of options: I can only suggest you try clicking some of the various microphone options;
if you select microphone capture: (on our desktop it is OFF by default); you then get a CAPTURE tab in the volume control window: again, by default, our microphone is set to ZERO by DEFAULT
eg see this posting in reference to the ASUS Eee 701 and Skype;
http://forums.geteasypeasy.com/viewtopi ... =12&t=1522
(sometimes you may find it easier to plug a USB headset in; go to Options in Skype; audio options etc)
another recommendation in skype audio options is "Change all settings to HDA Intel (hw:intel,0). Untick "allow Skype to manage mixer levels".""
let us know how you get along

Re: Internal Microphone issues
Thank you for your response. I re-installed the Main edition of Mint 7, so I'm starting on a clean slate in case I messed something up. My microphone currently still isn't working with Skype or with Sound Recorder.
After going to the volume control, preferences, and checking everything, my tabs show: Playback, Switches, and Sound Theme.
I am using the device called HDA NVidia (Alsa mixer), and the only visible mics are under the Playback tab and are listed as: Docking Mic, External Mic, and Internal Mic. Other meters (if relevant) are Master and PCM.
Everything is un-muted, at its highest volume setting. I may not have done something correctly, but I currently don't see anything that says "CAPTURE," which seems to disagree with you and every guide I have read.
Like you suggested, it may be easier to just get an external microphone, but I'd like to use the one in my computer if at all possible. In Skype, every sound device option shows '/dev/dsp', and none of the options give another choice.
In short, I have no idea where to go from here. If you or anyone else can suggest another course of action, I would be eternally grateful.

Re: Internal Microphone issues
hmmmmmmmmmm
right-click volume control; preferences; look in the right-hand colum; the top set of entries are "PLAYBACK" entries; at the bottom are "RECORDING" entries;
when I do not have any entry at the lower part of the list selected; (ie in the right column which has a "RECORDING" entry opposite), I do not get a RECORDING tab;
if I select any entry, that has "RECORDING" in the right-hand column, I create a RECORDING tab; so instead of just playback and switches tabs, I have three: playback, recording and switches;
If I click on the RECORDING tab, I get to see a microphone entry; curiously by default in Ubuntu, it is always set to zero;
can you find any of this?

Re: Internal Microphone issues
After right clicking the speaker icon; Open Volume Control; Preferences; the right hand column only shows 5 Playback options (Master, PCM, Docking Mic, External Mic, Internal Mic) and 2 Switches (IEC958, IEC958 Default PCM). Maybe Mint isn't reading any microphone capabilities at all?pdc_2 wrote:hmmmmmmmmmm

It sounds like you may have had the same problem, but I may be a little newer to Linux than you, because I have no idea what you are suggesting.. :/DiFS wrote:Hi pdc_2 and OOHnirav,
I've had the same problem. I'm using a HP dv6770se and Mint 6 x64. There is not any Recording tab because there is not any Recording entries in right-click volume control; preferences; look in the right-hand column; only Playback and Switches.
I think this could be help:

Re: Internal Microphone issues
I don't currently own an external mic, so I can't test it out, but if there is no way to remedy this situation, I may go ahead and buy one.DiFS wrote:Hi OOHnirav,
I got my skype to work using a external mic plugged and using in skype's voice device:
Audio Input: HDA Nvidia (hw:NVidia,0)
Audio Output: pulse
Bell: pulse
Works well on Sound Recorder too.
It's a little low, but that's OK. Controlled by External Mic in Volume Control on Playback tab.
If I let unplugged I can see in the level bar in bottom of Sound Recorder software that it is very low level, even with the Internal Mic on Playback tab is raised to 100%.
I believe that if you enable Mic Boost could solve the problem. But I don't know how to do that. Can anyone help to enable this?
I read in another forum the package gnome-volume-control-pulse (Ubuntu Desktop Team) can solve this problem, but I couldn't install it. I tried by synaptic and "sudo aptget install..." without success. It seems to be only available in Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04), so since you use Mint 7, this package is available for you.
I don't know how to enable a Mic Boost, either.
I downloaded the gnome-volume-control-pulse package, but nothing changed.. The only difference is that I now have two speaker icons on the bottom right, and I am unable to remove the new one (EDIT: I removed it by uninstalling the package).
Re: Internal Microphone issues
Alright, I followed this. I think mint uses an "input" tab instead of "capture" or "recording". I used the sound recorder after installing the volume-control.DiFS wrote:Sorry hear that, I will try to translate what I saw in the other forum:
Maybe this could help you. I don't know what is Canonical support. And I believe capture tab means recording tab in your Mint. About the external mic I am using, it's not a USB mic. Here, it's named 3,5mm (plug) mic, I don't know the name in english.AACFERREIRA wrote:Problem Solved,
Folks, it was not possible to place the mic boost in my sound card along with pulseaudio, the solution appeared to be more simple than expected.
It was needed to install the package gnome-volume-control-pulse maintained by Ubuntu Desktop Team without the Canonical support.
Once this package is activated, it will create a second icon in preferences for sound, inside it has a microphone input device, and there you can adjust the volume of capture.
Done it that people could hear me again in skype (or Gismo)
It creates in volume control a tab capture in the item device labeled:
Capture: Monitor of-HDA NVidia: ALC662 Analog (Pulseaudio mixer)
This item is only a tab named recording with a single control named Master
and adjusting it to the maximum level I have the same effect of Mic Boost. and so I have audio on VoIP
Good luck!
When I listen to my recording, I hear the sound that speakers make when they are cranked up and no sound is supposed to be coming out (I'm not sure what that sound is called, but I'll call it white noise). After experimenting, I figured out that if I tap on the microphone loudly enough, I could barely hear it within the white noise.
All in all, nothing was resolved, but this seems like a step in the right direction. Thanks for all the help so far! Any other suggestions would still be appreciated.
EDIT: Actually, I just un-installed the volume-control, and I can affect the white noise with the "internal mic" option in the standard volume control under the "Playback" tab. It's back to square one.
Re: Internal Microphone issues
DIFS and all...
I am trying to see how I can help here, realizing that we have to deal with alsamixer and pulseaudio, however, I have everything working on my laptop with multimedia, sound output and input.
First, I have been Mint since 5, and alsamixer has "always" had a recording tab (I have never seen another term used) in alsamixer. To get the recording tab, however, one has to open alsamixer, open preferences (now it is a button on the bottom right of the main alsamixer window.) One then must select Capture (put a check in its checkbox). You may also need analog loopback. and one or more of Digital Input Source and Input Source. These may depend on your hardware/software mix. (I have only Capture (checked) and Analog Loopback (UNchecked) currently showing of the above mentioned.)
Second, open PulseAudio Device Chooser (under Sound & Video in the Main Menu) then click on the Pulse icon in your taskbar, and choose Manager, then click on the Devices tab.
You should have a sources section with at least two listings, one with the word output and another with input in its description. Highlight the INPUT listing, and then click on the Properties button. You should see a volume slider near the bottom of the new window. I am now not sure what it was originally in mine, maybe 100 or 120%. Originally with Audacity my recording was very low. By experimentation I currently have it at ~145-7% and my internal mic is picking up my voice comfortably from ~ 2 ft/.6m.
Using an external mic ohhh, not working!...let me play some more.... I used it just a month or so ago!
God Bless
Doug

Re: Internal Microphone issues
Internal and External Mics -- here is what is working for me:
My hardware:
Dell XPS 1330, Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family)
In Alsamixer goto Preference button and enable (put checks in checkboxes):
Master, PCM, Front (I tried the Headphone channel but it does not affect headphone volume)
Capture
Analog Loopback
Digital Input source
Input source
in Alsamixer tabs
Playback - move all sliders up
Recording - move sliders up
Switches - Analog Loopback is unchecked by default, check it if you wish to hear mic input through headphones.
Options - Digital Input Source (Digital Mic 1 is default and uses internal mic if you have one) Select Analog Inputs if you wish to use an external mic.
Input Source - Front Mic is for 3.5mm jack, (Mic selection here is for USB mics? I do not have one to test.)
Caveats:
When you select Analog Loopback to listen through headphones as you record, I have not found a way to adjust volume level.
To add Mic Boost, open PulseAudio Device Chooser (under Sound & Video in the Main Menu) then click on the Pulse icon in your taskbar, and choose Manager, then click on the Devices tab.
You should have a sources section with at least two listings, one with the word output and another with input in its description. Highlight the INPUT listing, and then click on the Properties button. You should see a volume slider near the bottom of the new window. Originally at 100%. Currently have it at ~144% and my internal mic is picking up my voice comfortably from ~ 2 ft/.6m and at a reasonable volume.

Re: Internal Microphone issues
DIFS,
Your alsamixer looks NOTHING like mine! (and I am not referring to the language!) This must be because your audio card is different from mine.
Have you tried muting the external mic, to see if the internal mic is then used?
Otherwise, i don't have a clue...unless you have another audio card than the Conexant...only knew that company as a modem manufacturer!

Re: Internal Microphone issues
I have exactly the same problem ...
It seems my netbook (Kohjinsha SX series) doesn't know an internet mic is available so it is not in the list. I only have "Front Mic" for the external microphone input, which works so yes, I could use an external microphone but I'd like to have both ...
Is there a way to detect or check the existence of the internal Mic?
