The RC1 is in fact Ubuntu 9.04 64bit with the Mint things in it. That means that even the RC1 is almost as stable as the ice rock that sank Titanic ;)

Thats a good question. How long would make you feel safe, so that you would call it stable and install it? :P

It's actually because I don't want to do a fresh install of the RC1 just to have to upgrade 1 or 2 days later to the Main, anyhow, I've seen that the last post in the RC1 Bug thread dates back to June 3rd so that +10 days away, if no more bugs show up, it could'nt be that long for the Mint Team to have the stable release ready, they've done a great job so far and I'm very gratefull for all the hard work.

I expect that the RC1 will change into the final version without a hitch. Same happened with the 32bit version. So the 64 bit version is on my pc since it arrived on the servers. And that was a few days before the official announcement. And no problem that can't be solved :)

The GUI doesn't work or even the "sudo shutdown" doesn't help?

As you can see I don't post very often that does not say I'm new to Linux Mint more its such a good release and information is readily available look at my join date.
Their is a slight problem with mint menu after the latest updates, software manager, package manager seem to have a problem opening the authorisation panel.
but if I put the icons on the bottom panel all is OK. Apart from that most things work very well as one expects from Linux Mint. Well done Clem and all involved :D

I have installed Mint 7 32bit already and all is working fine. Now I have installed Mint 7 64bit RC1 and its not working. It always stop working with some kind of message about Bluetooth. I have tried it on other PC and Laptop, same result. I am wondering why. Since I am planing to add more RAM I would like to run the 654bit version since the 32bit version only can handle 3.5 Gig. Is there a way to get that fixed??? I love Mint and all that design what is coming with it and its soooo easy to handle so I would like to stay with it. Any help is deeply appreciated.

I've installed Mint 7 x64 and use it since the ISO got out, I put it on an USB stick via Netbootin in Windows, installed it from there, works fine. Mint Menu works fine, Mint update also. The Grub background and the desktop background are very beautiul and suitable to the overall design! Nice! Kudos to the wallpaper designer! :)

Bugs I've encountered:
- Rhythmbox hangs for 4-5 seconds while switching songs (i have 4000+ songs in my library) - it's because I installed the newest one from removed, reverting to the default one and everything works again :)
- Totem sucks! Doesn't advance to next movie/song in the playlist (tested also with Repeat and Shuffle options, but no avail), often then the position bar stays at the end and doesn't correspond to the current playback progress. I've removed it and added VLC ppa and installed VLC 1.0.0 :D
- I can't remove evolution-data-server-common and the deskbar-applet - I don't want them installed at all  ! Any ideas how to remove them?

Thanks Clem and the others from the Mint development team! It's a great release! I finally upgraded from Mint 5 x64! Mint 6 x64 had too much bugs...
Oh yes, and thank you for finally changing the theme and icons! IMO you can drop all the old ones, these new ones are a LOT better for my eyes! :D

utisest,
RC stands for 'Release Candidate' , which is similar to 'Beta". It is made available for testing, bug reporting. They state that you should NOT use it for your 'Main OS' , as it can be, and usually is buggy.
Once the bugs are repaired/fixed, the developers will then release the 'Stable" version.

Soooo, if you are not a tester, developer, and don't like dealing with possible bugs, I would recommend waiting for the Stable release.

regards, Richard

EDIT: Oh yes, 64bit will allow you to surpass the 3 Gb. RAM limit in 32bit OS's. but for normal use, the developers state that the 32bit version is more stable.

As a follow up to richyrich's post. RC means that it has already passed internal quality checks, but needs to be verified by a larger userbase. If no major bugs show up, then the RC will become the final release, as happened with 32bit Gloria, so it *should* be stable enough for install. However, I agree with richyrich that waiting for the main release is your best option if you need a completely stable system.

Just went from x32 RC1 to x64 RC1. Looking good. Only major issue is with PulseAudio/ALSA and handling integrated sound + USB headset, but I don't think there's a way to fix that until Ubuntu (and Fedora and everyone else) cleans up the huge sound system mess.

Only other thing, and this one is kind of silly, but the boot up/down splash screen is different from x32. Instead of the nice charcoal background with diagonal lines, and the mint leaf with the light rays, it's just a plain black background with the unadorned, washed-out leaf, logo, and progress bar, like the splash screen you get when first running/installing from the CD. Is there a way to configure it to use the nicer looking splashes?

Skype64 works well. Going to be testing VirtualBox and Wine tomorrow.

Thanks!

J

That Ubuntu updates are installed is quite normal. Mint is Ubuntu Plus.

The repos are down (or at least were a few minutes ago)
I have alerted Clem about it (he is the only one that can do something about it)

Any idea about the splashscreen issue? Is that intentional for the RC, or a bug?
