[fixed] MintMenu hangs + Ati closed"hardware drivers"

Post by walterav »

*Mintmenu normal behaviour:
If I click/start a application from the menu, the program starts normally and Mintmenu goes away. All seems fine

*Bug:
Mintmenu bad behaviour:
I installed the closed Ati "Hardware Drivers". Did a restart, to finish install.
After restart, I started a application from the mintmenu, the application starts, but the menu stays alive, which is not only annoying, but also software manager fails to load, because no password screen comes alive. So the popup window from software manager, and packetmanger, fails to show.
Click the menu button again and the menu dissapears "while the program is already up and running fine".
Also disabled compiz, no difference "Appearance>effects off".

*info:
hardware:
Laptop
MSI: ex620x-204eu
Chipset: ich9
VGA: ati mobility HD3470
audio: Intel HDA / alc1200 "http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=27980"
suspend works, with or without ati closed driver!

Software:
Linux Mint 7, updated till today...
Ati closed driver from mint menu, don't know what version. It didn't show up there.

Customization:
I customized mintmenu, with a 4 pixel sidepane border.
Rightmouse on Mintmenu>preferences>options"tab"
checkboxed showsidepane, and changed 1pixel > 4.

PS: Did 2 fresh installations both have the bug, as soon as the ati driver comes in.

The "mintmenu hangs" bug is an old one that can probably never be solved
Open gconf-editor (Alt+F2)
The key /apps/mintMenu has an option pin_menu and I think it has been selected for some strange reason
Deselect and you're ok
This could possibly affect the software and packet manager problem - not sure

Click on the little box in the upper left corner of the menu -- solved it for me! You only see the little box when you have this problem.

I can tell that the mint menu hang is fixed by indeed clicking the graybox in the upperleftcorner of the menu! :D

But I don't have any updates yet of the bug not showing the mint update screen, or mintinstall...

are you sure that's not just the age-old compiz bug that a popup can sometimes appear behind an open window? Either way, I can't reproduce the bug, so try posting in the support area, where there're a lot more people available to try and diagnose the problem.
