web cam in mint7? need help
how do I get this thing going? Camera monitor? nothing is showing up after I plugged in my web cam. I don't have USB 2.0, just 1.0. My old web cam is designed for 1.0 as well. Can I get this thing going so I can take some snap shots, and maybe look at myself on the screen

Re: web cam in mint7? need help
I'm a newb at this, and don't really use the terminal much.
My cam is one of those old Logitech ones, shaped like an eyeball. No numbers with it, just know it came with a disc for windows up to win2000/ME.

If you can open a terminal and run 'sudo modprobe quickcam' and plug you camera in. Now you should have some luck.
You can install cheese if all you want is to make snapshots.
Re: web cam in mint7? need help
If you just post the output of the lsusb (small L at the front) then we can interpret it for you, it'll give the exact model number (irrelevant of the reseller)marty510 wrote:I'm a newb at this, and don't really use the terminal much.

Re: web cam in mint7? need help
If I'm understanding it right, you're doing the modprobe as recommended, then plugging in your camera and waiting for a popup or something? Mint (by default) doesn't come with any webcam-using software, so you need to install the cheese program from the package manager, then run that to see if it recognises your webcam (you might not even have to do the modprobe bit)
Re: web cam in mint7? need help
this camera doesn't seem to appear in the latest UVC compliant list;
http://linux-uvc.berlios.de/#devices
or the latest gspca list
http://mxhaard.free.fr/spca5xx.html
so I would suggest you have two choices: 1) go test a camera off the top list: UVC compliant and it should work out of the box; if it works, buy it!! or 2) labour through configuring it
as in
http://linux.com/learn/docs/ldp/818-Webcam-HOWTO
happy to be told I am wrong

I just plugged my old Quickcam Express (eyeball cam) in and modprobed like I used to do, loaded Cheese and bang! No camera.
I guess support was dropped for this antique. There are so many better webcams out now I wouldn't waste another minute on making this one work if I were you.
Put the old thing to good use, tie your dogs toy to it and hang it where he can barely get to it, hours of fun
Re: web cam in mint7? need help
I think I'll do just that ,get a new one!
I don't have a dog but my year old cat still likes to play a lot
Thanks folks, for tryin' to get this thing going. At least I can get the list off the link(s) and find one that WILL work.

Re: web cam in mint7? need help
I have the Logitech, Inc. QuickCam Communicate Deluxe, a ball type webcam and with a laptop running Mint 7 and Cheese, I can recored video but not sound.
With a desktop running Mint 7 and Cheese, I had video but no sound. I mad the mistake of trying to change the resolution and lost the video. Nothing I do will restore the video. I gave up on this webcam. I will wait and see what your results are when you get a new webcam.
My Asus 4G mini laptop using a Xandros OS sees the webcam very well with video and sound. Go figure.
I have looked in the Ubuntu forums but no clear cut solution. Mostly, try this, try that. It seems many Linux people do not bother with webcams or are not forth coming with clear solutions.

Re: web cam in mint7? need help
My new Logitech QuickCam 3000 works out-of-the-box with Mint 7 64-bit in applications such as Cheese and Ekiga. I have both audio and video working in Ekiga. Granted, this inexpensive unit (US$27.99) is not IMAX, wide-screen, cinema-quality, but it gets the job done. I am posting a couple of links so you can read the specs and reviews.
