I am curious as to how I can navigate this OS with my keyboard.
For example: Pressing a key or key combo to open up the start menu, or the terminal.
What are some good hotkeys? I would like to minimize my use of the mouse.

You can use the Keyboard Shortcuts interface to set any hotkeys you'd like. Have fun

What would be the command for opening the main menu?

Alt+F1 brings up a faster version of the Mint Menu right underneath wherever your mouse cursor is on the screen.

I keep learning something every day - the default key combo for opening the bottom menu is Ctrl-SuperL , wehre SuperL is the Windows Start key on most keyboards. You can change that combo by right clicking on the Menu button and choosing preferences.
But I still prefer the easier Alt+F1 menu.
