A good linux laptop?

Post by Insane1 »

I was wondering if anyone had hardware similar to the following laptop's so that I could find out if it functions well on Linux or not. I have looked up certain aspects, and it would appear that ralink should be perfectly fine with linux...and it would appear the other hardware should be compatible. I'm more worried about hte usual suspect...the graphics card.

If anyone knows if this might be a bad choice...please let me know ^.^;; And if possible could you suggest another laptop that might be better? Note that I'm on a bit of a budget (and not a serious gamer anymore aside from SecondLife from time to time)

Also...I'm deciding between that and this model. This other model seems a bit higher in quality...but I'm a bit iffy about having to restart the computer to get wifi back...although that COULD be a vista issue. Also worrying is the fact it seems quite easy to overheat...

http://www.vgcomputing.com.au/nsmsiVR705-028AU.html
ref: your 1st link..(I used your link, might have changed since that mouse-click)
--better with all the specs

They both have nvidia chips, which is well supported with drivers by nvidia for Linux
--Ubuntu & Mint both easily allow the installation of binary drivers from Nvidia

Yeah. Sorry about the link changing. I accidentally added the wrong links for awhile. While nice, that model would be far beyond my budget. However...that website is interesting. I'll be giving it a closer look. Although the computer I'm more seriously looking at is the non gaming model here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6834152107

Again sorry about the links o.x

One thing to consider . . . :) . . is the full numeric keypad, makes the rest of the keyboard seem quite small. ( well . . :P . for my clumsy fingers anyway!)

You could also take a look at some vendors offering pre-installed Linux on notebooks
http://tuxmobil.org/reseller.html
of course vendors vary here as everywhere; emperorlinux happens to be a quality business
--and how long they have been in the Linux notebook business

http://www.emperorlinux.com/news/?year= ... =1031#1031
--that will give you an idea of the likelihood of some distribution's functionality..

Looking right now, but I can't help but see how blindingly expensive all these are...all of them over $1000, which is above what I'm trying to limit myself to.

Okay, I raised the bar a bit and looked at newegg a bit more to find something more within my budget and found THIS monstrosity. I've had good luck with Acer, so I'm giving this one heavy consideration. Thanks for the assistance I was given. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6834115594

If you are looking for a basic laptop, you might consider checking out http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/ ... 6-1260291- to review the specs on an extremely budget-friendly laptop. It is US$299 for a laptop, not a Netbook. It comes with Ubuntu 8.10, which can easily be updated to Mint 7 x64. While not an advocate of Dell products, this may be worthy of consideration. There is also a thread about this unit over in the Ubuntu forum for those interested.
Current hardware: a Dell OptiPlex 3010 desktop, a Dell Inspiron 531 desktop, and a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.
Current OS: LMDE 3

Actually, I did give that one some serious consideration. I liked some of the options it had, and it stayed within my $1000 budget even with alot of shiny extras to keep it going for longer than normal. The problem is with it's video card. They only offer one intel graphics card. I looked up the benchmarks on the model as well, and it's incapable of playing pretty much any game. With a CoD 4 as a benchmark, it barely pulled 5fps at 800x600 at low settings. Now I know DirectX and OpenGL are different, but somehow I don't think that something that performs so slowly at 800x600 with DirectX will be much better with OpenGL. (while I did say I'm not a heavy gamer, I do still enjoy games time to time). It's a shame, too...if they offered just a few extra options like a different graphics card, I'd have purchased that model. They ALSO had an XPS model laptop with Ubuntu as well...but given it's only color choice was "Passionate pink" ....yeeeaaah. Not the impression I wanna make at school o.x
