[idea] what about a tag filesystem?

Postby ylon on Sat Jul 04, 2009 5:09 am

Is long time I am thinking about the common way to set the file in folder and was thinking... "isn't a very obsolete way to structure files"
I mean, is a technology evolute (mainly) just in number of subfolder and the size of single file. But still... it looks like pretty bi-dimensional to me.
I mean, actual folder structure is like a platform game where you had to run all the way up to: A ------------------> B
just for example... what I had to do to run this file?
/usr/share/pixmaps/backgrounds/cosmos/comet.jpg

Here something like (run Supermario music in background)
* {us} [tab] // {sh} [tab] // {pi} [tab] \\ {ba} [tab] \\ {co} [tab] \\ *jump on flag and score*

well, I was thinking that a more "human comprehensive" way to set file is the real next generation of files (so: media and internet included) system.

One possible way is have a whole new filesystem...strictly based on tags.
I mean... the whole OS. Tags as I see them weren't just some words attached to a file...but had to be something more complex and powerful. What do you think if I say:
Code: Select all
color:orange

what if the name is:
Code: Select all
fruit:orange summer tree leaf date:200907041033 mime:picture codec=jpeg

or
Code: Select all
color:orange car:viper.gts road69 date:196002221256 geocode:39.409368,-101.680587 mime=video codec=xvid5 codec=mp3

I can ask "video" and run the car (only software that manage "xvid5" and "mp3" appear in "run with"). I can ask for a "fruit". I search for everything is orange... but my pc will show "fruits" separately.

There are plenty of possibilities with tag filesystem... but this aren't just name, these info should be put *in* the file and not as names....so a new way to see this is required.

mmmmh, is possible to patent the concept of tag filesystem, or I need first to develop a prototype?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Depends on what country, but in the US you probably could. The right people seem to be able to patent almost anything here.

I think you are actually talking about a search mechanism based on meta-data. If so, you might be a little late to the party. That is already being done by quite a few people and organizations. :-)

Democracy is 2 wolves and a lamb voting on the menu. Liberty is an armed lamb protesting the electoral outcome. A Republic negates the need for an armed protest.

Actually I was..... sarcastic

It's just sound strange to me that we still use a so obsolete FS like filename.ext. ok for windows be the most common OS and zero innovation but...where's the prototype innovations?
we're on paradoxical if you think that it's just more easy to upload and manage your media on internet that use offline on my pc.
I mean, with a little 8GB MicroSD I can have all the photos of my family in whole life...but also I am restricted to use piasa or whater to be able comfortable browse them (and medias aren't just jpeg)

Have you tried Tagsistant? It's a semantic filesystem using SQLite or MySQL to store metadata and a real filesystem to store data. It's able to do basic reasoning (equivalence and inclusion available) and features an autotagging plugin architecture. It's free software under the GPL.
