no sound with ATI card and hp laptop

Post by eddekay »

I installed mint 7 twice and everything except sound works perfectly! My system is a 64 bit AMD Turion x2 sound card is ATI Radeon full HD functionality chipset. I tried most everything I could and still no sound. Any Ideas?

First the easy thing: play a music CD or mp3 file. Open a terminal, type "alsamixer" and play with sliders and mute/unmute channels until you get sound (use the "m" key).

Thank you very much for the reply! But at last it didn't help.might be a driver problem I guess. T dont have any sound music, ment start up, key strokes, anything it's like I have no speakers. The music does work through the head phones but the computer speakers nothing.

If the headphone jack works it means the sound system is working, as are the modules/drivers. I still say it is probably a problem with your mixer. Go back to alsamixer and try again. Read "man alsamixer" in a terminal if you need help. If that fails please post the output to the following commands to this thread:

aplay -L
aplay -l
lspci
lsmod

thanks...

OK, strange everything looks fine on the driver and sound system side. It does appear you still have muted channels in alsamixer (mm). Do what I said in my first post again, paying attention to unmute all the muted channels with the "m" key.

Well I muted and un-muted so many times that I left one, But went back and un-muted the one that was set all volumes to max 100% played and played to no avail. I have tried other versions of linux like ubuntu, ophcrack live cd in the linux mode, Presto, Knoppix, and a few others. they mostly worked on several of my older pc's some like minx and ubuntu worked with sound on the compaq 2500 but none worked with sound on this one my main and newest computer. I really like the mint version and I guess I'll have to use head phones or external speakers that plug in to the head set port. Unless some one has found the problem and can share with us :D I would like to advertise Mint on my sites if its OK with the people here. Oh and one more note the speakers wnad every thing works under windows, This is a 64 bit system and I am using the standard 32 mint. Think maybe the 64 version would make a difference?

OK, I did some more digging for you , typed in the exact name of your sound card, HP laptop and Ubuntu as keywords to Google and found this fix:
