How can I install the latest version of LyX, which is 1.63? LyX is not listed in Synaptic. I am running Gloria.
I went to http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/LyXOnLinux and clicked Ubuntu but I don't see any info on 1.63.
I am looking for an alternative word processor because Open Office Writer is slow and keeps crashing and AbiWord has the same problem it had when I used the Windows version -- it takes forever to open RTF files.
If anyone can recommend another Word Processor choice, that would be great too. Thanks.

This application Lyx isn't really a word processor, it is instead a document processor (more akin to a DTP/Desk Top Publishing system) for Latex; a typesetting language..
You can install from source if you need the latest version

1. Source code
The sources of the current LyX release (version 1.6.3) can be found here (also in tar.bz2 format). If you don't know what source code is, see the article in Wikipedia.

I haven't had any issues with OpenOffice writer..OpenOffice 3x installed by Linux Mint 7..
Yes the latest binary version has windows or MAC installers only..
--which is a little odd, since latex is a Linux/Unix style typesetting system..
http://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/1.6.3/
--do you see any advantage from version 1.6.1 to 1.6.3 (differences that matter..)
- It's there...
apt search lyx
p lyx - Document Processor
p lyx-common - Architecture-independent files for LyX
apt show lyx
State: not installed
Version: 1.6.2-1
Re: LyX 1.63 -- Not in Synaptic. How to install?
Sorry. I see that LyX 1.62 IS in Synaptic. My Synaptic is giving me problems. Sometimes it doesn't seem to find anything when I search. Other times it does. Now it is finding it. My apologies, Dr.Hu. Thanks for your help.
I don't know if Lyx will meet my needs, I just want to test it out. I just find OO and Abi clunky beyond belief. Maybe it's just me.
