Dell Ubuntu systems = Mint Compatible?

Post by tall »

Hi all,

I'm weighing my options for a new system. I'm really unsure if I want a laptop, desktop, build my own, etc.

But I'd like Mint to be integral.

So Dell sells Ubuntu (8.04) on some of their manufactured systems.

Do you think there's a good chance Mint Gloria will work well?

Thanks

Indeed, any linux distribution should in theory work well, as it means the hardware has been chosen to be linux compatible. However, it's likely you won't get as good an initial experience, as I believe dell tweaks ubuntu to work perfectly, e.g. configuring certain drivers. The less work the dell guys have to do to customise it, the better alternative distros will run.

A little update here:

I'm currenty using my brand new Inspiron 15, running Mint (Gloria).

Due to pricing anamolies I actually ended up getting a MS Vista system from a local retailer. That is to say, it was actually cheaper for me to get this machine locally than to order the Dell Inspiron 15n. :?:

I'm pleased to report that I've successfully partitioned this machine (Vista still exists on this hard drive somewhere ...

...and everything I use it for works with no meddling on my behalf. The only issue, which is echoed on the Ubuntu forums is the sound is a little timid, but can be sort of amplified via software tweaks.

That said I'm glad to have purchased a new retail Dell machine and 1.5 hours later I've got a nice dual booting Mint installation!

Glad to hear it. I've always found pulseaudio's software amplifier to be good, but difficult to find: padevchooser > Manager > Devices > Sinks > Properties

Exactly -- unfortunately my initial testing indicates that even a few percent amplification results in very distorted sound.

Could be speakers, MP3 quality, etc. I haven't really taken the time to look into it in depth.
